New guy, working on my son's project '82
Hi all,
Against my better judgement I bought my son (16yr old) a project car last spring. It's an '82 GLS model RX7 with the 12A, manual trans, four wheel discs and limited slip rear end. When we bought it the cab was full of the parts and pieces that the previous owner had removed and not carefully bagged and tagged. We rolled it onto my trailer and hauled it home (last April I think). What was a 'complete' car turned out be more of a 75%-ish complete car with issues. In June we found a '79 up north of Spokane that is a parts car (had an engine fire), and the boys went up on a weekend and hauled that one home. We've been slowing robbing what we can off that one to make the '82 a little more whole, but the '79 is mostly a rusted out hulk. We were hoping to get seats and a rear axle shaft, plus the exhaust. It turned out that the axle shaft was the only thing that was usable from that list, but lots of little nuts/bolts/etc that we are finding useful also.
We've slowly been working our way through it, and in July got it running mostly reliably. This past weekend we had a big push to get it road legal so that he could start driving it to school before the snow flies. Mostly that entailed getting an exhaust built, fixing and installing all the lighting, attaching the steering column to the chassis, installing seats and clearing out any heavy objects from the interior so if he crashed it wouldn't become projectiles. Saturday evening he took it for his first drive around the area.
We still have a LOT of work to do before it's really ready, but at this point it's at least not going to fall apart. I told him before we could pull it out of the shop we needed to make certain the steering and brakes were in good shape. As long as WHOA and GO THERE were sorted, then the GO could happen.
Anyway, next up in the GO department is sorting out the rat's nest, or sorting out how to complete the deletion of that. Right now I'm hoping to find a diagram of the carburetor to sort out what NEEDS to be connected and what we can safely remove, as well as figuring out how to get the choke to work with the bucket of parts I have.
Thanks in advance, I can see we'll be spending some time on here!

welcome to the board.
can't wait to see some photos of the car. i love hearing these father/son Rx-7 stories.
in addition to the resources rxtasy3 linked above. here are a couple of links for your Rat's Nest delete. i'm not sure if there are any differences between the two (i've never owned an SA), so i linked both.
