new GIRL from PA!!!
my name is Karen, hello fellow RX7ers!! what a wonderful car we all love!! I have owned two RX7's in my life....one when I was 22 (my 1st car I ever bought brand new off the lot in St Paul, MN!!) and drove it home never ever driven a stick before!! oh what fun!! turned out to be decent in the snowy winters of Minneapolis!!
fast forward to day I am well over 22 yr old now and found that same model and year for sale by a guy in the South and I bought it and had it shipped to PA....my RX7 has 40K miles black with red interior in GREAT shape!! the "S" model plain and simple sports car which when I was 22 yrs old was ALL I could afford....still love it, it makes me smile....most of the time!!

Most owners become their own wrench-turners due to so-called 'mechanics' not having a clue how to deal with a rotary correctly, resulting in doing more harm instead of fixing issues properly.
As illustrated above, Unformed Guessing + Rotary Engine = Bad
The best thing I can suggest is to go into the FAQs and download the Factory Service Manual (FSM for short) and Parts Catalog for your specific car. The FAQs, FSM & Parts Catalog are excellent resources for all owners and should be bookmarked/downloaded accordingly. Even today, I still refer to the Second Generation FAQ.
Since you said it was a "S" model, I'm going to venture a guess that it is a 84-85 with a 12A under the hood. I'm not too knowledgeable with First Gens tho (86-88 is my specialty), so I'd feel better if I ran a build sheet on it to ensure you are heading in the right direction. If you wish, either post your VIN number or send it to me in a Private Message and we'll see what comes up. The First Generation section has a wealth of knowledge for fixing common issues pertinent to 79-85s.
We have them organized by production series as follows:
First Generation
S1: 79-80
S2: 81-83
S3: 84-85
Second Generation
S4: 86-88
S5: 89-91
Third Generation:
S6: 93-95
S7: 96-98 (Japan only)
S8: 99-02 (Japan only)

One thing I would like to mention is that one of the most useful tools you can have is a simple digital multimeter. Nothing too fancy, just a cheap $5 one from Harbor Freight will do the job fine. Alligator clip leads are also very useful with this too.
