new to forum, not an RX7 noob...
So quick story: a few years ago there was a gsl-se hanging around on my local craigslist. nobody seemed to want it. the guy reposted it every few weeks for several months. as a car guy with car friends (one who had an fd) I knew about rotaries, and with a little research discovered how special the gsl-se was (and sort of rare). Finally I replied to this ad and went to see the car. I didn't need a car, but I couldn't resist.
It was garage kept, hadn't run for several years, the guy had gotten it as a gift from his brother, drove it a little and that was it. his kids had played in it, etc. had plenty of rust in the rear wheel wells and underbody but nothing structural. I imagine this is why collectors didn't want it. Otherwise it seemed to be in decent condition and the guy obviously wasn't a car guy, didn't know too much about it.
Over the phone I low-balled him b/c I didn't need a car and didn't have a lot of extra money for a project. He turned me down, and I told him I understood and thanked him. A few hours later he called back and said his wife was making him accept my offer!
I drove over there in my NC miata, had a tow truck meet me, and dragger her home. I assured the guy I'd take good care of her and possibly do some autocross. He seemed satisfied.
I drained the varnish from the gas tank, tested the fuel pump, put marvel mystery oil in the 'cylinder' new plugs/wires/oil, charged the battery and....... started right up! Lots of smoke (i still have those pictures). For the last 2 years I've worked on it here and there, finally registered it recently and drive it for fun. Now I have to fix the power steering leak and parking brake. Next comes suspension upgrades and casual autrossing.
