Hello!

I'm a former RX-8 owner with a soft spot for FD's, although I've never owned or driven one. In my past I've had a MK4 GTI VR6, B5 S4, Evo X, and S2000 AP2.

I absolutely love reading others' build threads and there are some great ones here. I especially love hearing about folks who track their cars.

One of my dreams is to pick up a bone-stock lowish-miles FD and make a few tasteful changes. I agree with many others who believe that it's one of the prettiest cars ever built. Sadly they are tough to come by these days, so maybe I'll switch gears and do a track-focused FC.

For the moment I'm driving a 2009 911 Turbo that I've had for about a year, but I just can't see myself tracking it for fear of stuffing it into a wall.

Will track day insurance typically cover up to some kind of agreed replacement cost? They only made a handful (few hundred maybe) of manual turbos for 2009 so I'd be concerned that even with insurance I'd end badly on the losing end in the event of a total loss. There's also the question of getting my coolant lines pinned/welded. From what I've read a lot of tracks won't let you run certain 911s because they have a tendency to dump all of their coolant on the track unless preventative measures have been taken. I don't think mine has been addressed and I believe it's a couple grand to have a shop do it.

 

welcome... you will find lots of very well done build threads. i helped build my buddies s2k ap1 with a vortec kit. another amazing machine. I have never been on a track with any of my babies and would certainly no track a 911 turbo; that car for me is god. i have one true love and its a Porsche 911, the rx7 fd is a very close second so much so that it is the main reason i don't have a porsche instead of it..... also cost!

I've bought track day insurance before, its agreed value. Obviously the more it's worth the more it cost. Also a HPDE will be cheaper than a timed event.

I'd really like to know your opinion of the FD rx7 compared to your 911 Turbo.

 

Me too, I just need to find somebody who will let me drive their FD

My mods/tune on the 911 are supposedly good for 550 hp / 600 ft-lbs at the crank, which is a lot of fun to say the least and give it a serious acceleration advantage over a stock FD. Then again the FD weighs about 600 lbs less and has better overall weight balance, which are big factors in driving enjoyment. The FD also has something like 1,250 extra RPMs to play with before redline. I'm willing to guess it would be difficult to choose which one to take for a drive up in the mountains.

You would be surprised how hard it is to stuff an AWD 911 on the track! Now the RWD variants are a little more tail happy. The FD will feel a lot more balanced and not as much push from the front end as in a 911 Turbo. Both amazing cars!

 

FD is a lot lighter than the 911, too
