Making a Huge Mistake
...and looking to buy a rotary for daily driving duties. Getting rid of the flawlessly reliable IS300 and diving into a world of passion and pain that is the FD3S. What am I thinking?

I know someone who DDs a mostly stock 1993 Touring RX7. In all honesty the worst problem is gas mileage. I don't care how bumpy, loud or uncomfortable my FD is, I ******* love it. I literally can't frown while I'm driving it. If you're going to daily drive it hard (and lets face it man, it's an FD, you're gonna) you should at least take care of basic bolt on reliability mods. Bigger alum. radiator, larger inter-cooler (v-mounts are the best, if you want to shell out the big bucks) and twin oil coolers for good measure. If you can find an FD with most or all of those modifications done, awesome.

haha thanks guys! we'll see how it goes. I am not out for huge power or anything. I know how to maintain a rotary, Ive owned an Rx8 in the past with track flogging and zero issues so it should be ok. Im not the kind of guy who does a 1-4 pull on every onramp, so pretty much this FD will be pampered save for the occasional mountain pass beating. What kind of gas mileage do you guys get with basic bolt ons and a PFC tune? This is the engine setup I plan on running for daily driver duties

I guess that depending on how you mod the RX7, you could end up having a reliable car if everything is done right. However, when we do modifications we often prefer having the best gains to have a fast car than having a reliable one... as other says, good luck!

Welcome. It's not a huge mistake, just take care of reliability mods, keep up with maintenance and have some money saved up when something breaks. I recently sold my daily driver, a 2005 S2000, and picked up an FD. Sure it isn't very practical, but a car like the RX-7 was meant to be driven. I'd recommend looking for a cheap backup car (if you don't already have one) for when the rotary is down. Good luck

I am driving a nearly stock 83. I get 22 miles to the gallon on most fill ups. Half my trips are less the 5 miles with multiple stop signs and the like. On long trips that are purely highway I get 30 pretty easy. There really isn't much of a reason to get less the 17 mpg averages in the city if you were to ask me.
