CA Just purchased an RX7 on ol' eBay!

Hey Guys,

New to the forum, new to RX7's and just purchased an RX7 on eBay! Told myself never to buy a care from eBay again, last two were boat anchors, but third time lucky, right?

Seller told me it was a cherry one owner, so we shall see!

All I have is the original auction page, link below. Its just a plain old GS but a one owner car and from what the seller is telling me, its in excellent condition.

I looked at a few in person but even in the pictures they looked bad, seeing them in person was actually depressing (who lets there cars get that run down!). This one looks pretty good, imho not too bad for the price....

What do you guys think? I know its not a steal but I didn't think I did too bad...

Sounds and looks pretty nice actually. Much nicer than I would expect from an ebay car. Price ain't bad if the car runs as well as it looks in pics.

Check out the FAQ threads stickied here and learn.

Thanks all for the positive feedback! I was looking for something practical (i.e. Volvo 850 Turbo), looked at a few RX7's on creepy used car lots (more browsing) noticed this on eBay and ended up buying it, all happened so fast, really wasn't too prepared. Hell you only live once, right?

I don't know much about RX7's, I was more of a Z car guy (my last ZCar here) but I like the style of the RX7 and since I am an engineer, interested in the whole rotary thing. I am sure once I own one I will be hooked.

I will follow up Wednesday/Thursday when she gets delivered and let you know how it looks.

@fc3s22585 - Don't have the car yet, so not sure if it has worked out for me!

@minuteman7 - Didn't use PayPal, just wired him cold, hard (electronic) cash.

Worrying feeling is started to settle in, damn guys, what if he has run off with my cash! What if its just a large boat anchor? What what...

I am protected through eBay's VPP, just gotta chill, calming down......

Oh wow, you're most likely fucked. Are you stupid? Do you even see the "safe buyer tips" at the bottom of the auction page? Honestly, you don't deserve the car if you are this stupid.

Wow FCJoe, get out the wrong side of bed this morning?

Wire transfers are covered under the VPP, how would you pay for a $20k car on the other side of the US? PayPal, haha, like to see the fee's for that. Now if I was stupid and paid for it via Moneygram or WU, you can call me whatever you want, but I wasn't THAT dumb.

Yes, it does look like Joe woke up on the wrong side of the bed to say the least. Ignore him.

So, it actually arrived last night and by night, I mean 11:40PM. These car transporter drivers have a hard life....

The guy couldn't get the thing to start, kept cranking until I pointed out the choke, by that point he ran down the battery, I should have paid attention to what he was doing. Ah well, messing around in the dark, about 38F outside, what fun! A quick charge and starts up like a dream, idle is very smooth.

The other part to this, is I can't actually drive her, there is no plates! I was aware of this, the seller was trying to get it sorted at the DMV and I could either wait until next week to get the car or get the car yesterday (same day he shipped it) and have the plates FedEx'd to me for Friday. So I need to wait until tomorrow.

Apart from all that, description was pretty much spot on so far. She looks good for an 85, not 100% mint, but not far off a garage queen. Engine bay is mint (car has not been detailed), looks like the previous owner took pretty good care of her. Radio doesn't work and hatch struts are gone, but these are little things I don't care about.

Even came with a bunch of cassettes, Genesis anyone? haha

Looks to be a beauty! Hard to find really clean original FBs nowadays. Glad you actually got the car and the only issues are super minor.

So, so far so good. A few things not working, radio, locks and hatch struts, all pretty easy fixes and Ill talk to the seller about getting some cash back for these, to be fair, he has been very helpful. Noticed a few new parts by the previous owner too such a new radiator, starter, etc, all look about a year old, so a bit of a bonus.

I did notice a little oil on the garage floor, I am gonna jack her up and see where its coming from, it was nothing major, just something that was not brought up in the description. I have a painted floor so any leaks stand out.

Question is, for you guys with your 1st gen's, whats really acceptable? Im a little lost, owned a lot of British cars (i.e. V12 XJS) that would just leak all the damn time. I'd say that over one night, there was about a teaspoon of oil on the floor, should I be concerned?

I can't comment on your question about oil leaks on a 1st gen.

What shipper did you use for the car and how much did it cost?

I used Avo's Auto Transport, it was about $200 from LA to Visalia, I'd spend more in gas picking it up with the truck. The guy picked up and delivered the same day (albeit quite late), but service wise he was spot on. He is based in San Fran and seems to drive all over California.

Mine loves to leak a lot from the o-rings in the oil filter pedestal. Honestly it was never enough to bother me though.

Thats the common oil leak thread. A little oil leaking doesn't bother me enough to fix it, I just check it often. Visalia, eh? Not much places to test cornering out there...
