Im one of those TT inline-6 guys

So I’ve been trolling the forums for years and finally decided to post today...In the past I have always had one car that was my daily driver and tuning experiment but now that I have established myself in my career I have decided its time for a daily beater and a nice project car.

My progression of cars is as follows...
First car was a 01 Toyota Celica GT. I worked with Hass Auto to prototype their first Celica turbo kit and while it was a lot of fun, I ended up bending the #3 rod in a Z shape and blowing it out of the engine through a softball sized hole.

Next was a 05' SRT-4 with 60trim that I put down 418 WHP with...I must say out of all my cars that one was the most satisfying because nothing replaces the sound of a big turbo and the feeling of boost kicking in...even at 3700 RPM

For some reason I decided I wanted something a little more nimble and stylish so I sold the SRT to some 16 y/o who I’m pretty sure killed himself in it and bought a 00' white on red S2000. I put all the nice JDM parts on it and loved driving with the top down but never got around to forced induction and I never was really satisfied with the car.

Then I graduated college and started my job as an officer and engineer for the Air Force and bought my Lt.-mobile (as we call it) a 07' BMW 335i. I’m currently driving this as my daily in Dayton Ohio and while I enjoy it, I really miss heavily modifying my car. The N54 engine utilizes direct port injection and while it is a very impressive system with regards to fuel economy-to-power there is a HP wall at around 400WHP that the fuel system absolutely cannot surpass. Since DPI is so new there are no upgrades available which means no big turbos and no high boost. All in all it’s a great car if you’re satisfied with mid 12's and a mild set-up.

So now that I'm over the bimmer I’m ready for a Jeep Cherokee daily driver and either a MKIV Supra TT or a FD3 RX-7...So I'm coming around to see what the supra community has to offer. I must admit the FD3 has an edge since I live within 30 min. of rx7store.net. Any way, Thanks for reading my life story here and I hope to contribute to the forum.

If you have any questions about the 335i I would be more than happy to answer them as I am pretty knowledgeable of the car and tuning issues within the community.

i also am a fan of the turbo inline 6. im building a Toyota Cressida with a 1jz swap to use as a daily while i build my rotary miata. after the stock twins blow im looking to throw a rebuilt and upgraded ct26 in and tune for a reliable 350-400 hp.

Welcome to the boards! Nice list of cars btw, as long as mine. My daily is a v6 Audi a4, and the fun car is a turbo RX-7.

Obviously coming to an RX-7 board, most will tell you the FD is the way to go over the Supra, but I'll chime in anyway. Personally, I'd take the FD because it's more fun to drive [lighter (3400 lbs vs 2700 i think), better weight dist.(50/50), great suspension etc.], looks better and a biggie is I think it's more fun to modify. It depends though if you want more of an agile sports car or a GT/sports car that has the potential to kill anything in a stright line...

Anyhow, good luck on your quest.

Thanks, If I could mix the drivability of the Celica with the power and mod friendliness of the SRT and the style/handling of the S2000 I would be in heaven...and I think the FD is the answer to my search...I just have to stop watching vids of 1000hp supras!

It seems that the 13b is a lot cheaper to repair if you blow it up as compared to a 2jz, is that true?

If you blow a 13B(T)... it must be rebuilt. Now this is pending on what blows...but remember blowing a piston engine is not even close to being the same as popping/blowing a component in a Rotary.

Just my 2 pennies.

As Dream Theater mentioned a blown rotary is different than a piston. It really depends on how it goes, worst case scenario detonation can chip an apex seal and if enough of the seal breaks off and messes up your turbine wheel(s), that isn't cheap. A rebuild if it's just the seals is around 1500-2000, again totally depending on what broke. I'm not up on my rebuild prices for 2jz-gte's so I'm not sure. Overall, most would agree that rotary's are more sensitive to detonation, so you need to mod correctly and you need smart tuners. I'd really pop into the thrid gen forum and check out all the high hp rides... they are very common. The rotary does have a weakness to overheating, but it's an easy fix.

It really depends on what style you want, but it does sound like FD fits you. As soon as I took a spin in one, I was hooked. It just revs so freely and is very agile. The rotary is very addicting. I'd try and get a ride from someone local

well I just checked ebay and 2jzgte's are just as expensive if not a little less than 13bs....back when I was thinking of trying a 2jz swap in my s2000 I looked at prices and thought they were much more expensive.

Reguardless I would want to purchase a FD3 with a blown motor and have it towed strait to RX7 store for a street port and installation of a HKS T51R kit
