Hey all, Wanted to take a second to reintroduce myself. Been out of the rotary game a little over 3 years. Unfortunately, when I moved, I was not able to bring my beloved gold 83 RX-7 to Atlanta with me. I have missed it dearly, and as of last night, I picked up another golden rotary queen.
Small back story, car was purchased new in 83, OG owner of it parked the car back in 97 under a tarp, and never drove it again. The owner was quite a motorhead and had all sorts of cool cars and motorcycles. The lady I got the car from claimed her uncle had nearly 190 horsepower in the car, but it looks like a stock carb and headers, so not too convinced. Has an exhaust of sorts on it. Fast forward to 09, the owner unfortunately passed in a high speed accident. The car was meant to be passed down to his nephew, who after the passing, never got around to fixing it so it sat in a garage the past 9 years. Being in Georgia, the body is fantastically solid. The rear brakes were seized up but I easily removed them with 2 screwdrivers. The lugs on it were another story. I could barely get them off, time for some never seize.
Small amounts of surface rust and some cosmetic grossness need addressing. As of now, the car has no battery, and won't run. I went over to Rock Auto and ordered just about every part I could think of to tune it up, fuel pump, filter, spark plugs, wires, etc. Love their low prices, these cars are so cheap to work on. Really would like to get the car running this week. Also looking for any leads on replacing the fabric on the A beam side pillars, and window seals, as they are cracked. Have to tear apart the driver side door too, the window does not like going up or down, is definitely falling off the track and may need some hardware inside there too. I've got to get some new tires for it sooner than later, options are limited. Only thing I can find in a 195-60-14 that looks passable is the Falkens, but I am going to keep looking.
Car is of course, gold. Red interior. 1983 Limited Edition. As far as I can tell, the limited doesn't add much beyond what I previously had besides the equalizer. Having a sunroof, power mirrors, cassette, and such was all things I was familiar with. Once I get the brakes and tires on in the next week or 2 I'll be evaluating the suspension system. My plans are to keep the car fairly stock, and do some tasteful modifications. Anything in terms of cosmetic upgrades would be an authentic body kit, wings, louvers, anything cool and period correct. I'd love to find a
Mallory kit again, one went locally a few years back. Glass roof if I can ever find one reasonably is on the list. The worst looking thing about this car is the sunroof.
Looking forward to keeping you guys updated on the progress. If anyone is around Atlanta area, would love to shoot the breeze, or snag any cool old parts off you when time and money permits. I am beyond elated to be back in a rotary. These is truly nothing like magic Doritos making noise.
Few pictures below, first thing I did was a quick wash it and release the rear brakes so I could roll it to the garage. Happy Spinning!
He was sad to let go, but she is going to a good home. He knows I'll treat her right and get her going.
I need to get better at posing for pictures, this is not my most photogenic shot. Can you tell I'm excited?
Cleans up alright, gotta put in some major elbow grease to get off the rest of the grime. Just a quick bath while I was firing up the grill.
Trust me, this is the better side of the rear. Other side has some poorly done pain't work. Nothing a little bit of time and new paint can't fit.
