Hi, nice to meet you all

I did not own a rx7 yet. I have already looked as many knowledge as I can to get prepared for a rx7. I am not a fan of modification at all so i just look for the proper maintenance and repaire information. I want to be able to use the marketplace function here to find one rx7 near me so I created an account. However I am not able to post there yet.

My family has a lot mazdas. I own 2021 cx30. Unlike others that influence by movies or anime, the reason I want rx7 is just because I like mazda. Cx30 is my first car and it works amazing, You guys might know the feeling of owning first car, i spend every hour in it. As a californian, i am prepare for art school in chicago in fall. It is a huge challenge for me to drive all the way there. So I decide to explore mazda more and get a car there after I sell my cx30. I personaly dont like the mx5 design so I went for old cars. At first I was into rx8, but after I sit next to the road and watch all day to find and observe rx8, I found out that it look different than picture.

This forum helped me alot on all the information. A lot smart and experienced people here. It is my pleasure to join this forum. I wish you all the best.

Welcome to the club. It sounds like you've got the right idea in doing the homework before jumping in. As for modding, I've found that keeping an open mind yields the best results due to certain items being known issues. For example, alternators on the SA/FB (60 amps) and FC (70/80 amps) are known to be weak. A basic stereo install will push it into failure. Some retrofit one from a FD (100 amps), this was my first mod. However, anything beyond a basic stereo install will result in the exact same failure again. This is the reason why I ended up retrofitting the alternator from a second generation Ford Taurus (130 amps).

The short version of why comes down to how the output is measured. Mitsubishi (supplier to Mazda) measured peak output only, and idle is roughly 50% of peak for their alternators. Ford specified I believe 90A (70%) at idle and 130A at peak. Mitsubishi kept adding to the peak output over time. In contrast, Ford built up the baseline and got similar peak power in the process. A more detailed explanation can be found by searching my posts.

The Taurus alternator is the Captain America of electrical parts. "I can do this all day". Modifications that are well-reasoned and build up the car's baseline allow the rest of the car to do the best job it can at every turn.

Welcome to the club.

If you can, I would highly recommend keeping your CX30 as a daily driver. RX7's are now upwards of 40+ years old and parts can be difficult to source.

Your CX30 would be a much better vehicle for driving to school or work and running errands. Also the winter weather in the Chicago area will destroy the underside of your RX7.

Thank you for reply! I understand your concern. My school will be located in urban area so I will buy a motorcycle for daily transportation. Moreover I believe there will be some public transportation service I can use. I will only use this rx7 to maybe go to another state or something. So it will be below 2000mi/per year : )

Sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck on the search! If it's an FD you're after you'd better get one soon, because the prices are going insane lately.

Side note: Our daughter's new Arctic White RF Club Miata gets nothing but compliments. Edelbrock has a supercharger for it that doesn't kill the warranty, and holy crap parts are available, plentiful and cheap.

Keep the CX30. You will thank me the instant you have to bring home something like an alternator, wheel hub, etc. Or when it rains, snows, etc. Or if you need to go buy a few tools. Or you need to do normal stuff like go get food at the store. Lugging groceries on a bus is 0% fun, I know firsthand from 2012.

Practical question: How would you get something like a floor jack back home without a vehicle? My jack weighs 80 lbs. And I have 4 wheel crib stands that weigh 28 lbs each.
Work smarter, not harder.
