Hello from VA

Greetings from Virginia! I have recently just bought an S4 1987 NA Mazda RX-7. She's not in the best shape, but she does run. I'll post some pictures once I have more time.

Great to finally be part of the RX-7 Club forums!

Gen2n3,

Thanks for the welcome!

As for the FC, here are the problems I've found so far over the last few weeks.

1. Tires and rims need to be replaced - tires are rotted and rims are bent/scratched/dented pretty bad
2. I've noticed that brake pedal is pretty stiff - pretty sure the brake booster is junk; needs to be replaced.
2a. Also, while I was getting the RX-7 off the tow truck, as I was pressing the brakes, the brakes didn't seem to be stopping or slowing down the car as it rolled down (even when I pushed the pedal down to the floor), but the emergency/parking brake did. It could be just the brake booster and maybe I need to rebleed the brakes as well, or it could be the whole brake system. But I won't know till I at least replace the booster.
3. After I let the engine warm up, I've noticed that the idle RPM is bouncing from 800RPM to 1200RPM back to 800RPM and so on. I've done a bit of research on this already, and narrowed it possibly being the TPS needing to be replaced/recailbrated since it's been sitting for more than a few years. However, I've also heard that it could be the Idle Air Control valve or the AFM sensor. Again, won't know till I inspect it further.
4. I've also noticed that when I use the shifter, I have to completely depress the clutch pedal in order for it to shift. To be honest, this is the one I'm kind of scratching my head on right now. More than likely I feel like it's the clutch master and slave cylinder that needs to be replaced, but I'm not sure. Some people also said that the clutch disc could be coming loose as well (Never heard of this happening in a car ever but I hope that's not actually the case for the RX-7).
5. There are also a few parts missing from the car, though majority of them are pretty minor.
- Exhaust System (Previous owner wanted to keep the exhaust system since it was aftermarket)
- Shift ****
- Wiper blades
- Radio Unit

That's all I've found so far. Everything else works (for the most part). It seems like a solid car overall and there's no leaks coming out of the engine or underneath the car from what I could see, and I'm sure if I pour a few grand into it and a little bit of work, it'll be running and driving in no time. I'm probably going to tackle with fixing the bouncing idle first, and then probably get the brake booster replaced and see if that helps with the brakes.

Again, thanks for the warm welcome!

Welcome!! Sounds like you have a list of things to tackle but it sounds like you're more than willing to do so!! I would inspect the clutch hydraulic system for leaks and if none are found, start by bleeding the system and see if the low clutch pedal gets an better. Commonly the slave cylinder will leak past the seal on the piston and on the same on the clutch master cylinder. If they're leaking, replace both and the flex hose.

Do you know any of the car's history? Looking forward to some pictures of the car!!

Thanks for the welcome! And thanks for the advice, I'll definitely look into that. If I run into any more bumps, I guess I'll post in the technical section of the new member forums. And I'll definitely post some pictures tomorrow.

Thanks a lot! Also here's some pictures I took earlier. Sorry if the angles weren't the best, as you can kinda tell my garage is a bit cramped with a lot of junk, hence why there's a built shelf over the car lol.

Also, if anyone is curious about how much I got this RX-7, I paid exactly 1000 in cash for it.

It does run okay but, I wouldn't really call it in driveable condition. The guy was asking 1500 for it originally.

I think its a great car for the asking price!! Appears as if it originally had blue leather interior and the acoustic equillibration sound system. That included a factory cd player and extra speakers in the doors. The car appears to be in nice shape though. Will look forward to more updates. Feel free to make a thread about the car in the 2nd gen section documenting your progress with the car!!

Thanks, I'd like to think it was a good purchase as well lol. And I was wondering if that was actually leather or just some leathery feeling vinyl in the interior, but either way that's really cool about the interior and that it had a CD player orginally especially since it's a 87. And I'll probably start a thread once I move into my new garage in a few months so that I can have some more room to work on it.
