FL Finally got my first rx7!!

hi, my name is Henry and im 18 years old. i'm from Orange Park, FL. i just resently got my first rx7. its an 85 GS and i love it. The rx7 has always been one of my favorite cars. ive had quite a few cars including a 98 escort zx2 (first car, grandparents wrecked it :[ ), 93 nissan hardbody truck, 89 honda prelude (POS), 93 lexus sc400 (regret selling it haha), 86 300zx turbo (still own and up for sale), and now my 85 rx7 GS.

i know a few things here and there about rotarys. ive never had the chance to work one till now and im very excited to learn about it and apply it to my 12a. i got my 7 about a week ago. it is completly stock. i just put on some new ngk spark plugs, new distributor cap, and xacto spark plug wires (didnt have the money for ngks at the time haha). besides the minor tune up i needed the car is in pretty great shape. it had a recent paint job (grey), the interior is in decent shape (red cloth).

im so excited i have the car and have so many ideas for it. i just dont know wat i should do first. im thinking the carb needs to be tuned or somthing because it hesitates if u give it a lil too much gas at low rpms, from idle to about 1800 or so. any ideas, or advice about that or anything else i should do?

Thanks for registering with the website, Henry!

The hesitation is caused by a lean-out of fuel-to-air going into the engine. It is more than likely that your Accelerator Pump has developed a leak or the tabs holding the pivot arm are worn so you're not getting that squirt of gas you need when transitioning from the idle to the main circuits for speeding up when on the highway.

How's that for a helluva run-on sentence??

Hit the 1stgen tech section and input "accelerator pump carb" and then get something to drink and start reading.

Welcome aboard! The more 1stgen folk who join RX-7 Club, the better, I always sez!

ohhhhhh ok, that makes sense. thanks for the info!
two more questions, is the accelerator pump kinda like a smog pump? and if that is my problem, would my problem be solved if i just removed it?

Wow you've gone through quite a bit of cars in a short time.

Good luck with the rx7.

Henry, the AP sits on the Nikki carburetor itself. When you step on the gas, a series of brackets work together to push a lever arm that pushes the AP rod into the AP housing...that housing is always full of gas and provides an extra shot of fuel into the carburetor to overcome the lean condition that exists for a split second when the butterflies open wide and the signal to the carburetor venturi goes away...thus not drawing enough fuel from the bowls to keep the air:fuel ratio in the correct proportion.

Ready to start reading the long version yet?

If the AP has a leak, then the gasoline shot, since it is forced out of the AP into the carb body, goes everywhere else and the engine goes lean, stumbling in that moment. Go to Sterling's website (I can't provide the link per Forum rules, just use Google, it'll give you the link...) and he details a modification to make the AP work better and become adjustable. Just don't ask him any questions if you know what's good for you.
