cant live without her

hi, im not quite new with rotaries, and i'm very happy that i ve chosen this path and this car
I've bought my '93 Touring Rx-7 on eBay from flemmings ultimate garage in Maryland for 14K$
but it costed extra 12k$ to pay all the customs fees and transporting charges
Anyway the car's damn worth this money and I never regreted to buy it. It's a dream car and I'm its happy owner (even though after those expenses I have to tighten my belt pretty much ^^)

Welcome.

Good luck with the car. Post some pics when you get a chance.

We have a European sub-forum on here where you might find others in your part of the world.

$12k in fees!!! That's murder... Sort of like when people here in US tried to purchase skylines and the government decided to step in and ripoff anyone trying to do so.

I think it all comes down to political "you scratch my back, I scratch yours" as payback to car companies for campaign bribes basically. They don't want the grey market getting to big.

At least your FD3S should be super rare in Moscow, I bet it turns a lot of heads.

Not exactly correct info there sport.

Skylines and other JDM only cars are illegal for sale/import into the US b/c they haven't passed the Feds testing procedures and don't meet other regulations - such as emissions and crash standards and positioning the steering wheel on the correct side etc. The Gov't is just enforcing the laws that are in place.

That being said, lets keep the thread on topic.

I just happened upon this old thread kind of by accident, but congratulations on getting the car!

Interestingly, I live in Maryland about 15 minutes away from that Fleming's Ultimate Garage place. They seem to specialize in 60s and 70s muscle cars and usually have cool stuff parked out front. I remember when they had your car there. I want to say it was almost a year ago. How long did it take to get the car from the U.S. to Russia? I'm sure there was a lot of red tape.

I'm impressed that you got the car for $14K. I think they were originally asking much more for the car, like $19K or $20K. I didn't bother looking at it because I imagined the price was pretty firm. It has fairly low mileage, right?

Anyway, congratulations again and welcome.

Well, it took about 1,5 months to get it here. And yes - there was much to worry about but all went just fine. I have a friend of mine living there nearby - he did all the buisness - I just had to get the car from the customs office.
We transferred the car through Finland - Kotka. It s a bit longer but twice (or even more) cheaper then shipping directly to Russia.

Well, nobody can question your dedication to the love of rotaries!

Are there many FD RX-7s in Russia? I'm guessing no. Will you be doing all your own work on the car, or do you know somebody there who specializes in fixing them?

Actually there s lots of work to be done and I m not sure I can handle everything
There s a specialized rotary service here in Moscow. I have worked there for some time and I can tell people there are the same enthusiasts as me and have no special education in this field. Just working and getting experience during the process (actually like almost every other tunning garage or atelier). So I think Ill do part of the work on my own, engine should be overhauled in that very service, and suspension and other matters I m going to settle with my friends in other town ^^

And no there's very few FD in Russia (about 20 -25)
and about 2- 3 FC (1 turbo II) and round 6 Cosmos, 2 of which have 20B engines
Almost all of the owners dwell on the www.rx-7.ru forum. BTW this is the site of the rotary service I practiced in.
Guess I have answered all the questions

Wow, it's neat that you have such a rarity, and it sounds good that you'll have decent support.

What is surprising to me is that you say the engine needs to be overhauled. I thought this car was in great shape when I saw the advertisement for it.

well, it is, because I'm not sure of how previous owner was using it
because I was thinking to make a circuit race car out of it
(for now the compression is really fine and I'm glad I was able to just sit in the car and drive it away from the customs office)
however there s a bit of doubt because the car is beautiful and rare, and it s so pity to disassemble everything and bring a whole new but another-looking and purpose car to life
So I thought to make a show car out of FD (or simply a beautiful car for my dear self) and to make a race car out of FC turbo II with it's wonderfull 12A
of course that depends on my finances, because I dont have money to buy another car right now)))
however there were thoughts about ordering, building and tunning a 20B or even '89 Le Mans car's 4rotary engine, and changing the car to mid-engine and... as you see I have many thoughts and it's hard to make a decision ^^

Well, you certainly have some big plans. If you were planning to build an engine from scratch, you probably should have looked for an FD that had a blown engine; you could have found one of those for less than half of what you paid...

Also, the FC Turbo II had the 13BT; the 12A was in the SA/FB.

In any event, best of luck with the car.

I ll learn that now better than never

That is a clean car but 12k in fees? That would have been a deal breaker for me even if I did have the money to buy the car in the first place.

That would have been the same for me, but I live in Russia, and I guess my people is already used to such way things are. If you want something - pay twice the original price for that and get lost ^^.

your car is pretty indeed! I wouldn't mind paying that much for a car, but for $12K for other custom and taxes fees..i'll have second thoughts..
