a Canadian hello

Lurked the forums here for ages, little low on the post count though (this is #2).

Have had 1st gen RX-7's in the family for over a decade. Amazing cars, and there's really nothing else I've owned that compares.

Current RX-7 ('82) has well... kept me busy.

Got it about 5 years ago. Steering box was broken (adjusting bolt was snapped). Replaced it with a used one that had a slightly bent steering shaft which resulted in the car wanting to pull to the side. Since it had taken 8 hours to swap in -40 weather, I just dealt with it. Carb was pretty plugged as well. It would run, but idled extremely poorly. Pulling the fuel line and pouring straight Wynns carb cleaner in the carb would fix it right up... for about a day - then it would be back to not-so-good. During the time it was driven, the clutch plate managed to warp when someone else was driving it (don't ask how) - the warped clutch plate kept the clutch permanently engaged but fortunately the starter managed to move the car fast enough in 1st gear to get it started and I was able to dry-shift it all the way home.

One day, coolant ended up getting low and the temp gauge started climbing. Tried to limp it home by going a couple km at a time, shutting it off, waiting 20 mins and going again, keeping the temp gauge just below the red. Didn't seem to matter - the overheating melted a coolant seal and the engine was toast.

Fast forward to last year, and my father had an '83 that he let me have. Had a pile of issues and eventually decided just to put the motor into my '82. Good thing too - with the engine out, noticed part of the '83s frame was rusted out (big holes) on both sides near the idler/pitman arms. The car was basically an accident waiting to happen.

On to the '82. Swapped the engine in, but have been fighting carb issues which are now *mostly* worked out. Piles of welding, fibreglassing, etc have been done as the floor was rotting pretty badly in places. Once it's running perfectly (I'll break down and buy a Sterling if another 10 carb removals/adjustments don't result in any improvement), just have to replace the heater blower and hopefully the fuel sending unit (which doesn't work and is going to need some serious work to remove).

Despite the issues, these cars are a blast to drive, and I'll be thrilled once it's in tip-top shape. Our winters/weather are pretty hard on these cars, but hopefully once it's all done up, it'll last a long time
