From Burbank to San Francisco, a middle aged man’s erotic rotary journey….
My title will make no sense to you, if you have never watched Seinfeld.
But I did just “see a man about a dog” in Burbank and I am on my way back with a red 1993 Mazda RX7 R1 in red and black, and with only 37k miles. I am based just south of San Francisco.
I had a PPi done at rotary power in LA, good compression, clean car, no crashes.
I picked up my new Rx7 at 3pm today, and the A/c tried to keep up, but it must be low on Freon. I decided not to deal with rush hour traffic and heat on the way out of LA, so i grabbed a hotel and I will set off at 5-6am tomorrow.
Car is gorgeous and it pulls strong. No mods, which I love! There is a bit of a whoosh when I get on the throttle, hopefully this is a waste gate magic. The car died a couple of times, so I will have someone chase vacuum leaks or raise the idle speed. It feels great under load. The tachometer stopped working, but then came alive. I will “need” the racing beat muffler because some muppet installed an undersized Midas exhaust.
Overall….Not too bad for a 20 year old Japanese car. I used to own an 85 RX7 GS when I was in Texas and when I was much younger and lighter. I had to get back to that silly smooth rotary crack, and this fit the bill.
I work in tech, and I also own 3 Italian and Brit motorcycles, a 1967 Citroen, a c2 corvette, and a 2015 Police Interceptor Utility, along with some boring daily drivers and Ellon-mobiles. I have always had problems with focusing.
I am searching all the threads and histories in this forum, for inspiration, for now. Hope the drive back tomorrow is uneventful.
Welcome to the forum!! That's a beautiful Vintage Red R1!! Do you know any of the car's history? Shame about the undersized exhaust system but it sounds like you have a remedy ready!! Would definitely love to see more pictures of the car!!!

Thank you! The car had a single owner since it was purchased new in 1993, lived in LA, but owner commuted back and forth to Indiana, so did not use his car. He sold the car to his buddy in LA, who also kept it mostly parked for a few years, and then sold it to me. I just cleaned it up and I found a loose vacuum hose, so maybe this will cure my stalling at idle issue. And I found a missing trim piece at the driver side footwell, bottom of the center tunnel. I will need to find an FD at a junkyard!
WOW!!!!! Your car is an absolute time capsule and it's incredible in every regard! I honestly believe it doesn't get much nicer that what your car is!
Regarding the trim piece, you may want to post an ad in the marketplace section here on the forum, reference the trim panel. I'm sure you will be able to find someone willing to sell one.

Thanks. I had thus far contacted about 20 eBay recyclers and one of them "might" have it, but needs to dig through his stash. All Mazda dealers said "no luck". I will post an advert after eBay comes up short
