Another new guy from SoCal. Possibly new fc owner

Hey guys my name is Ralph I'm from Bakersfield, ca and I'm looking into buying a 1990 rx7 n/a 5 speed it has a rebuilt motor with about 45,000 on it. This is going to be my dd for now and so my big questions are how reliable are these motors? Would you guys say they are expensive to maintain? And if I do buy it what would be some good preventive maintenance to do to keep it reliable? I'm very good with working on cars but I've never owned a rotary before. I appreciate any feed back I get.

Hey Ralph,

I am a newbie to the forum. but I have been playing with the rotary engine since 1982! In regards to A DD and reliability, you must remember your car is legal to drink! It is a 21 year old car that will need some tinkering.

Here are my thoughts on best areas to go through to make your FC reliable.

1. Vaccuum Lines... The FC and FD are beasts to get through smog and run at high temperatures that wear out vacuum lines that are very hard to detect. With vacuum leaks come the dreaded "flooding" and other issues like stalling etc. The first thing my son and I did was replace all the vacuum lines with silicone hoses from hose techniques. We found some hard and cracked lines from the previous owner who was convinced the motor was blown. We have replace and the car is running well now.

2. Fuel injectors- I would consider a good cleaning, when you take off the top of the upper manifold to get to the vacuum linesit is a good time to get at the injectors. They have little seals where they go into the fuel rail that are also a problem child, so I would suggest plan on the car being down for a week and get the fuel injectors professionally cleaned and then replace all the rubber that mounts them RC engineering in Torrance is a good source with quick turn around....

3. Cooling is the killer of all rotaries. Make sure you have a good radiator, fan and fan shroud as well as a undertray to seal off and force air through the radiator. Also make sure you bleed the cooling system with the bleed screw on the radiatoir. New aluminum radiators are a good choice, but come at a cost. It is something we are saving up for.

Hope that answers your questions! Also realize that rotaries are addicting and very simple you can rebuild a motor with a book or DVD giving you instructions, so I wouldn't be to afraid.

Joe
