90 GXL (I think)

Hey there. My name is Mike, and I own an RX7.

I've wanted one for years. Never actively pursued the purchase of one, but this one sort of fell into my lap. A kid had a non-running 85 camaro he needed moved, and offered the RX7 for payment to trailer his Camaro to his house. It's pretty beat up, a white non-turbo GXL (at least I think it's a GXL...no turbo, but power sunroof = GXL...doesn't it? Though it has wheels from a '91) with severe damage (unrepairable) to the right front and left rear. Has other body damage, but I can fix those things. Also missing a passenger mirror, has a broken driver side door lock assembly (might be able to fix that, but we'll see). Also supposedly has blown apex seals, which I have no way to verify. That leads me to another problem. This stupid thing has been in my yard for 2 months because the kid I got it from can't find his key, though I think I have this solved now. A locksmith told me to bring the passenger door lock to him and hopefully it'll have the keycode on it. If not, he should be able to disassemble the lock and make a key for it anyway, though that will be a bit more expensive.

Anyway. I'm here, mainly, for technical advice (won't need much, just a few bits of info...I'm a pretty competent mechanic), parts sources (can't for the life of me find body parts online for an RX7), and some generic technical info when I can't find it otherwise.

Since this car was a freebie, I can justify putting more money into it than if I'd had to pay for it. That means it will probably get a turbo, though maybe not until after I have the engine and body work done and it is a running and drivable.

For now, I have one question I need to ask, and it makes me feel stupid doing it, but I simply can't find the answer any other way, so here it is:

Looking under the hood, there is a radiator cap on a piece of plastic that is just laying there. It obviously needs to be mounted somewhere, but I can't find where. I will (if I can) attach a photo so someone can maybe tell me what it belongs on. My vision, close up, sucks, and I can't really see well unless I have light and my reading glasses on, and since I can't move it to the garage with the key and get it under light and on ramps/blocks, I can't get intimate with it like I would prefer. So, any help with this would be great.

Mike

Welcome. That appears to be a radiator filler neck that has been broken off. S5 RX7s ('89-'91) have that piece sticking out from the radiator near the battery.

Not broken off, just unbolted. After posting this, I found a coolant system diagram that shows what you told me...that it belongs on the top right side of the radiator. What's happened here, apparently, is that a radiator that doesn't belong has been bolted in, and this one has a reservoir it draws coolant from rather than using a fill cap. Not sure I'm comfortable with that, I suppose I could get an inline fill tube with a cap and do it that way. Not sure what I'll do with that overflow tube, but I'll figure something out.

Anyway, thanks for the reply.
