What do you think of this "poor mans" vented hood?

The stock FD hood has perfect triangles that you can cut out easily form the underneith the skeletion.

Im just concerned with the heat, I dont care for the looks. Theres the 10 page batman thread that has no proven FACTUAL info on it and I dont see how this wont help...i cant decide because some say yes some say no.

So do you think its worth it to cut up the hood for this mod?

The pics are form http://www.shift-light.com/rx7

that's what I was planning to do to mine...But I ended up getting a good deal on an N1 hood, I like that, I will probably still do that to my hood.

Doesn't look too bad but I'm not really a fan. It reminds me of the TRD Supra hood......

i love it. the rest of the car ain't bad either!

the only thing i would be worried about is the rear edges of the vents acting as scoops rather than vents. the tight mesh spanning the holes might help with this a little, duno.

I don't mind the look. However would it work, or would they act as scoops?

Honestly, i'm not a fan of any of the "Rich man's" vented hoods, as I think all interupt the lines of the car, but I think yours is actually not bad.... especially on a darker car.

I think the mod is only as good as the hand behind it. I think the real test would come in actually monitoring/recording temps. before and after the modification. As for how it affects the aero, I'd apply the same question as I do other aftermarket hoods. I'd still go with what works.

If you actually want to do this mod for cooling purposes, you would be well advised to open up the triangles closest to the windscreen. The low pressure there will allow some flowthough air.

I think that actually looks pretty good. I would be afraid that it would look shitty up close though...

Not nearly as functional as a true vented hood. Look at something like the real Mazdaspeed hood or the ones atihun makes. The key is the kick up just in front of the vents of the "real" hoods. This creates a local low pressure area just behind and extracts air out from under the hood. By pulling air out from under the hood you encourage more air to enter the nose ducts along with reducing front end lift at speed. If all you have is mesh the airflow is going to go into the engine compartment rather than out. At the very least this means more air under the car (bad) and possibly at the worst it also means poorer flow of air into the radiator mouth since the underhood area is now even more highly pressurized (also bad).

There's no reason the mesh can't work but it needs to have a lip on the front edge to act as a spoiler. Admittedly if you added this to a stock hood that has been cut up it's going to look ugly. Functional, but ugly.

I've seen a few geo metros running around with their hoods cut up like that.
