what is the best car alarm

I wouldn't say a car alarm is worthless, but every bit of protection you use will deter a greater percentage of potential thieves. However, if someone really wants your car, they will get it.
Alarmwise, I'd go with Viper. I spent a couple of years installing thier products and they work very well, with very few faulty components. Install it yourself, though, and put it in an odd location. Every shop always installs them in the same place, so a thief would know where to look to disable it.
Best advice: install a kill switch and hide it somewhere. Splice the efi main relay or fuel pump wire.

Compustar is the best hands down. They have the one and only auto-start technology for standard transmissions, that can be installed safely, and installers will do it easy. Originally before I got my compustar, I looked at viper, and they would not install the auto-start feature. They said they couldn't due to safety reasons, being if you have the car in gear it would pull ahead. With the compustar, if you have it in gear it won't start, and you have to have the parking brake engaged. I find it works great with rotarys because you have to warm these cars real good before driving them (especially turbos), so that was a big plus for me, and was able to ditch the old sit in car for 3-5 mins.

I use the stock FC alarm in conjunction with an aftermarket shock sensor. (Which the OEM alarm was not equipped with.) I'm covered if someone opens the doors, and if someone smashes the window. . . However, if someone wanted to take the car, they could and would regardless.

...do you guys not have proper alarms with immboilers in big ol' america or something?
iv got an AVS 5 star alarm with 3 immobilers.
One on the starter, one on the ignition and one on the fuel pump. I also have a glass break sensor, tilt sensor and impact/vibration sensor..
You cant start my car (without the alarm beeper) without rewiring a whole heap of stuf that is all hidden well away and all wrapped up in black electrical tape so everything looks the same - all the labels on wires have been cut off & taped up, tucked away etc
oh its also got the normal siren and also another backup siren with its own independant power source (so you can cut the power to the battery - or the wires to the alarm or whatever and it will keep going off, they are in very tough little black boxes and the only way to make them stop is throw them in a bucket of water)
i think maby we have better alarms over here then you guys - insurance companies recognise them to the extent where you would have no excess on fire & theft if a good alarm is installed - Also some cars commonly targeted by thieves they wont even insure the car for fire & theft unless its got a good alarm system installed....
