Thoughts on Nakamichi decks
So I know a few people have the Nakamichi players in their rx7's. My question is do these guys really make top quality decks? For those who have Nakamichi, what are your opinions and thougths? I know they went out of business, but other than ebay where else can i find one.

Nakamichi makes the best headunits on the market period, well maybe except for pioneer p9, the denon hu, and mcintosh hu. Other than that they are known for crystal clear sound, and are very very expensive. IMHO I think they dont really look to appeasing, just oem kind of look, personally I have a alpine cda-9853 and love it and cant tell the difference between that and my friends $700 Nakamichi hu. THis might be because my speakers are worth over $600 and he has $400 comps.

Nakamichi make incredible decks. Serious audio guys will often go the Nakamichi/Mcintosh route. If I had money to waste on a custom setup, one of these two decks would be my choice.
As a side note, I am running an Eclipse deck right now and love it.

Nakamichi makes wonderful equipment. They don't have all the marketing gimmicks with the flashy lights and the myriad of useless features, but they have it where it counts. They sound great, are simple to operate and have classy looks.

i never said nakamichi was not a quality component.
a sony computer is quality built, but i would never buy one.
im sure a mercedez benz is a nice car, but i will never own one.
if it makes u feel better, eclipse is a waste of money also.
really though, it depends on what you want to get out of your radio. if your not running an amplifier or component speakers, it makes little difference in the audio quality of what type of radio head unit you choose.
im not interested in purchasing a brand name to brag about it. thats not why i bought an rx7, and thats not why i bought my stereo components. but if u like big GT wings and 19" wheels, go for it. if they are going out of business and u can get a good deal comparable to other stereos that offer the same options, nakamichi is an excellent choice. remember the rx7 came with a bose stereo stock, that doesnt mean anything anymore.

My Lexus came stock with all Nakamichi stuff and it sounds excellent. Stock headunit, 6 door speakers, 10" sub, and amp. Stock. I was going to change it out before I bought the car but won't touch it now after listening to it.

Bose is just a familiar name that most people think is pretty descent. It's not bad but it's not worth what it use to be. You can have better for the same price or cheaper.

^^^ I agree with the above statement.
Being a bass player I also have experience in recording and sound engineering on a minor level. Bose today is not what it used to be at all. Too much money just for the name.
As for Nakamichi I myself am looking at buying an MP3 playing CD300 model off of ebay. Not bad at all for 400 new. Even though it is JDM and the frequencies do not correspond with US frequencies there is an easy way to fix that. Their home web site states that it is compatible. I think that is because they do market them in Canada and it is for canadians that also frequent US radio frequencies.

I've owned many Kenwood and Alpine HU's in the past. Last time I purchased an HU was about 4 years ago when I purchased a Nakamichi CD45z. It has never given me any problems and the sound quality is excellent. If it ever breaks on me I'll be getting a Mcintosh HU.

I own a Nak cd-35z (older deck), Pioneer Premier previously. Nak is far better, but it does look plain compared to others (and less tempting for crooks). The one comment I get about the deck is them asking if the deck came with it, it looks that stock.
Having been around Nakamichi in home & car audio, plus Yamaha, Sony, Pioneer, Alpine, etc, you cannot go wrong with Nak. Much better quality. Not that big of a price difference compared with the other stuff (you are paying for gimmicks with most decks).
For the one thinking of going for the cd-300, you're better going for the 500. The 300 only has a 1-bit d/a/c compared to the 24-bit in the 500 (it makes a difference).

It basically goes quality versus quantity on this one.
But yeah, McIntosh is your other best bet.
Enjoy guys

i dont own a nakamichi deck BUT i use to have 2 10" nakamichi subs. When i first got them i was kinda worried they wouldnt be that good, was i ever wrong. some of the best sounding subs ive ever heard. they pounded hard and never distorted
of course they were stolen, but i would jump on a chance to buy any nakamichi equipment.

Would you really be able hear the difference in sound quality output from a $800 Nakamichi deck versus a $300 Sony deck in an rx7 that has rock hard suspension, a loud *** midpipe and little sound dampening?
In a cushy Lexus I'm sure you would be able tell the difference.

I have a Nakamichi CD-40z head unit and it sounds good and works perfectly. I really like that the appearance is subtle -- that is one of the things that attracted me to Nakamichi stuff in the first place.
