Was there a panel under the hatch carpet in the FD?

Was there a factory panel under the foam/carpet in the hatch of the FD which covered the spare tire? I can't for the life of me remember now if there was or not. For some reason I think I remember a black plastic panel with foam pads on it which fit on top of the spare, but my Supra had one, so I don't know if I'm confusing the two. It's been too long.

If there was one originally, the ******* who installed my cage managed to lose it. However, I wasn't able to find one in the body section of the parts lists either. So...

1) if there wasn't one, someone should make a panel to support the carpet (and cargo, within reason) for those of us who chose to ditch the 21 lb. spare tire.

2) If there was one, could someone give me the part number or refer to #1 and make a carbon fiber replacement or something.

Thanks!

Jim, I could have sworn that there was a panel. I think it was made out of fiberboard (this may have been in 93 only) and had some foam stuck to it to keep the carpet on top flat.

My only question is the one in my garage that I thought came out of my FD, didnt seem to fit just right when I tried to put it back in.

Mine looks like r-r's, except that it extends farther toward the back of the car, so that it tucks under the edge of the plastic trim.

Thanks guys. I guess the next step is to track down the part number so that I can get rid of the spare.

That piece had two versions, one is longer and extends under the plastic is made for the R1/R2s due to the fact there is no Bose. And the Bose models were shorter. Go figure.

Yeah, the one for my base model completely covers the spare tire well and extends just under the rear trunk trim.

Found the part numbers. They're posted with the carpets in the microfiche:

FD01-68-83X w/o sunroof ($74.40 from Mazda Motorsports)
FD05-68-83XA with sunroof ($83.20 from Mazda Motorsports)

The sunroof one is shortened for the Bose install, like in the pic above.

Given the price I say you go buy a $5 piece of masonite and cut out your own

Why stop now, I've spent more than that on a handful of Mazda bolts.

Did you know that the rubber coated alignment inserts in the rear subframe and engine cradle are $14.xx each?
