sub box question?

hey guy's.
i come from a back ground in in music and understand that speaker cab's is a dark art in some ways. ie the box has to be the right size. this guy at my work said car speakers can be tossed in any box and sound fine. i dont think this is true if it is correct me. if not can you post link to places explain how to figure out the inside volume you need for x speaker. i want to make a set of boxes for my two car out of scrap wood i have from making basses and guitars.

well, a couple of things about the wood from guitars, they have a much different vibration pattern, and also doesnt have any kind of sypathetic vibration, but rather a focused predictable vibration pattern. there is also a reason that boxes are made out of mdf. no need to have a nice vibration pattern but is only there for building purposes.
as far as building boxes, yes they have to be a certain volume on the inside for specific reasons. if you are talking about subs, just read what the required volume is and then decide what kind of music do you listen to the most then go from there.
as far as speakers are concerned, the required volume doesnt matter that much, just make sure that it doesnt vibrate. i would line the inside with some kind of batting (you can get it at a fabric store)
i did that kind of stuff for a living, and am mecp certified. but, i would read around and see if someone hasnt used the speakers you want in some sort of application.

peace

just look up the data for your sub and it should tell you. if you don't have it just find the sub online. if you can't find it, post the name on the sub and i'll find it.

thanks, i was going to make the box out of mdf, then put a 1/8th inch layer of weng over it instead of carpetect. thanks for the info.

i mainly listen to classic rock, alt rock, jazz, iam a bass player so i really like to hear the bass. i dont want it to be like the systems people use when they listen to rap.i like punchey bass but i dont want to set off alarms.

lol. let me tell you, setting off alarms is awsome. i had a 1500 watt 15" sub, it was beyond overkill and sounded like ***. but hey, it was free.
anyways, then with that music selection, i would go with a sealed (box) 10" (sub) faced toward the back seats, if you dont have back seats, then find another place for it. low end sounds is omnidirectional and doesnt matter where you point it. i would run ~500 watts, and run a 2 channel amp, but thats all a matter of budget. really, ive heard amazing sound from a sealed 8" cranking 200 watts.
have fun, and think carefully before running wires.

if you can find the spec sheet to your speakers u can use the programs in the link to design biuld and tailer the freq curve to your needs..

blaubox is a easy program too use if u just want the basics.

http://diyaudiocorner.tripod.com/software.htm

a 10 or a 12 with 200watt rms will let u hear and feel the bass with out over powering your mids and highs

but for box placment that changes with what the box and speaker are tuned to u want the sound wave length to be tuned to the distance it travils inside the car.

i was thinking 2 10" or 2 8" in there own boxes. or if i put them in the same box ill have a wall inside between them. from trying out different amp cab's for bass guitar, i found i like the sound of the speakers separated in the box. for me it sound much cleaner.
o yeah i have a sa if any one was wondering. if i use two boxes i was going to mount them right behind the seat. any one see problems with this beside me getting sick of the feel of getting kick in the back when i listen to primus.

you really wouldnt notice any difference. youre talking about specifically built for very specific sound patterns based on performance. for subs in a car, you will not notice a difference, like i said, i did this stuff for a living, and i never noticed a difference. besides, 2 seperate boxes will be bigger than 1 box.
just fyi

you really should be using mdf wood to make your box, I remember back in the day i made one out of particle board and it sounded terrible.

MDF (medium density fiberboard). mdf and particle board are two totally different things, why would you use particle board?

I have 1 old school JL audio W0 that sounds pretty good in my FB. I love it. I had 2 in there and they made my hatch jump and i got worried about my screws falling out. And they are in the 175- 225 rms range at 4ohms.
