i want to add a sub to my car for christmas. my current stereo stuff can be viewed in my sig. i want to get one 12" alpine type r. it comes in both 2 and 4 ohm. whats the difference? for the amp i want an alpine single channel 350 watt RMS amp. would this setup work well together? i wont be running the speakers off the amp, just from the head unit. is the 12" perhaps way more than i need because of the hatch back?

that's actually gonna sound real nice. dont have an amp yet 2 the speakers..so im runnin off just the headunit too...and i got the 12" alpine type r myself...love it. got it hooked up to a mono-channel amp, somethin like 400 watts i believe. u can REALLY feel that thing. got a lil custom enclosure so it sits wayy back in the trunk, takes up minimal space (ur prob gonna need one too, cuz the magnet on that sub is pretty big, so the hatch cover wont fit unless the sub is facin up.

oh and if ur gonna really use the sub, id suggest goin w/ a battery for it as well, cuz i know ive come close to completely drainin the car battery a cpl times...that thing takes some juice!

 

did you have enclosure custom made for you? and i plan on having it on all the time, if thats what you mean by really using it. but not cranking it as loud as it can go. the dimensions of the box are
Width: 14"
Height: 14"
Top depth: 12"
Bottom depth: 18"

if i lay it with the sub facing up i think ill be good. i dont have a hatch cover either.

 

yea i did have the enclosure custom made. cost me $150...so not bad at all. i dont have the car w/ me so un4tunately i cant give u the dimensions (its STILL and 4ever at the shop lol) but it's sittin way back in the trunk, so in height it's as tall as the harness bar minus an inch or so (to give the sub room to play)
length...it's pretty wide. u need it wide enough to be strong enough to hold the sub, or the sub will blow. lying flat, my mtx sub exactly fits next to the box in the narrow part of the trunk...so the box takes about 3/4 of the width of that narrow portion of the trunk.
and it's only maybe an inch or so wider on each side than the 12" sub itself.. hopefully that'll give u an idea
it's wrapped in the black material instead of that gray stuff that the store enclosures is in...so u can hardly tell it's there =) it's almost like the trunk is just smaller (not as long)

as for really usin it, i mean crankin out power. i use all 400+ watts of mine, ill tell u that. to the point that the dim lights in the car will flicker or dim somewhat lol. so that's wut im talkin about.

as for leavin it w/o a hatch cover...hey that's ur deal, but i think an FD is an eyecatcher as it is. the LAST thing i want is a sub and amp in plain view that scream "STEAL ME!"...so the custom box was a MUST for me so i can have the hatch cover on...

 

i dont have an FD, but i was still thinking about the whole stealing thing. maybe ill just throw a blanket over it? haha

 

blanket works...that's wut i was doin until i got the custom enclosure..but there r 3 probs w/ that

a) its dead obvious ur hidin somethin lol.. and size/shape can give it away
b) ur gonna hafta take it off whenever u feel like usin the sub, cuz u cant have the sub rattling against the blanket
c) u cant cover the amp w/ it...amps tend to get hot..and need their breathing room...

but hey, if u dont mind gettin outta the car, uncovering the trunk, usin it, then coverin it up again every time ur gonna use ur sub..then ur str8
