Spray Can Advice
My shop teacher won't let us paint our cars in class. Even if we bring the paint, we still can't do it.
Since i don't have a paint gun or the necessary safety equipment, I'm left with spray paint
I going to spray can my 87 Rx-7 white with the black trim; because I like the flat finish for some reason.
The only place I have to paint is my driveway.
Question 1: How will I protect the basecoat?
Reason: Is there clearcoat in a spraycan?
Question 2: How long will this take?
Reason: weather conditions
I appreciate the support!
P.S. I have plastic filler and glaze for my dent, also sandpaper.

i've seen good results from a paint roller first hand. just do some research on paintrollling a car. i've dealt alot with spray paint... and it is a technique to get down. I've spray painted pretty much all of my body parts with Rustoleum Sunrise Red... it matches my car perfectly, and then protected it with Rustoleum clear coat. The hardest part is not getting overspray while using a spray can.
After my adventures with spray paint.... I'd rather paint roll my car. Don't get me wrong, I've spray painted lots of parts just fine, wheels, lips, sideskirts, trim and they still hold up just fine and look like a legitimate paintjob. It's just those minor spots..... that keep it from looking ... amazing?
but yeah,
get some primer, basecoat, and clear coat. I personally put a couple coats ... probably around 3 to protect the basecoats. It's going to cost you alot of money to spray paint your car.
you should let about 45 minutes to an hour between coats. Primer dries very fast, so you can just put it on, finish spraying the car, get a quick lunch and then start sanding away.
it'll take much longer for the actual basecoats and clear coats to dry. (hours) Make sure to get all that grease off the body, or you'll get some orange-peel paint spots.
might not be the best idea to paint in your driveway.... you might get debris, pollen, grass, bugs, that kind of stuff on your paint.

alot of posts got deleted i guess, the ones who posted before talked me into painting my car "the professional way". I got a tent, compressor, paint gun, and all the necessary materials, on that date, the weather was sort of cloudy. I underestimated how long it would take to rain, and it rained, I thought that since I'm in the tent with my car, I'm safe. Then wind started blown hard, as I'm shooting primer. I stop, grab my camera to take a pic of my process, and the tent gave way, dented my car, I dropped my camera in a puddle, and I fall down and get wet. I thought, "take a picture of this fail" but my camera's screen was white, and the memory card must have shorted on the copper contacts, because it doesn't work. So now thats its dry, I'm going to do the roller paint job, the one with the Rustoleum and mineral spirits, paint roller with the foam roller, and time. I got the sandpaper and I re-did my bodywork, so it should work fine. I read alot on how to get the mixture right, and the time before coats. I got this. Clear skies for this weekend, no wind, and a warm temp. I'll take pics with my bro's camera.

This is the paint roller method. It totals $100. Instead of doing that to my car today, I took my paint can to a local bodyshop. They said they won't paint it. So I'm left with that till a later date. I refuse to drive around with a half primer/ half bodywork RX7.

I bought all the tools finishing rather cheap, 30 gallon compressor, 2 HVLP gun kit, hose, line driers and filters, respirators, etc. for very cheap, most of it from Harbor Freight, i can pretty much spray anything with what I've got on hand and i didn't spend too much at all, maybe $250ish. I figured it would be worth it to buy the tools myself, it should save me money when I paint my FD in my garage (with proper ventilation that is)
