Smokers and my FD.

Unfortunatly, the person who owned my car before me ,smoked in it and as a result there is this "tar" on my gauges and my glass moonroof.I was just wondering what you guys would use to clean this off.I went to a car detailing place to buy something to take it off and this guy tryed to sell me this paste and also recommended buying cheap toothpaste. He said that this is extremely difficult to remove,so before doign anything i wanted to hear what you guys had to say. any help is appreciated!

Thanks.

Joe

I'd use the same method that I used, remove entire interior and scrub the **** out of it. Soak plastic parts in the bathtub and scrub with Ajax and brillo pads. My car was a smoking car. No I can't tell, but I also re-finished the interior.

You also might look at using a fogger first:

When my black interior comes through thts wat ill do,but as far as scrubbing things to death i scrubed the living hell outta my moonroof and it did little i used fine steel wole and a lotta of random cleaning supplies laying around the shop and they all did little to nothing.

once the tan interior is soiled its impossible to get it looking new again. I guess your stuck with the fail interior until you go black.

I haven't tried the Meguiar product yet, but it's highly recommended on Autopia.org so I plan on picking some up. In the past, I've had good results on the tan panels using Blue Magic's Leather & Vinyl Cleaner with a 3M scrubbing pad:

Ill defiantly think about scrubbing my new black interior down with this if it needs it as far as my tan interior interior goes after removing it i might just try selling it although tht will be next to impossible.

I used to be a smoker. I would periodically clean the windshield, gauges, and pretty much all the interior with Windex. After that, I would go over the dash components with dash shine, and the seats with leather cleaner, then leather treatment. Both the smell and the grime should be gone at this point.

I think the stuff you're cleaning is the smoke particulates that just clung to the surfaces. I never needed to remove interior panels.

Theres no smell to it and my panels are fine its just my RPM gauge and my moonroof tht i took from another car are all foggy.i wish i could take a pic of it but unfortunately my car is in storage for winter and i cant get to it. I scrubbed the hell outta all tht with windex and it did little.

try acetone on the glass. acetone works wonders if you know when and how to use it. Don't use it on any plastics though because it will melt it.

For the gauge covers, I would just recommend buying a new cover:

Should be less than $100. It was around $60 when I bought mine a few years back but I would expect the price has probably grown a little over the years.

you can find acetone at Home Depot, Lowes, and the drug store because women use pure acetone to remove stupid nail polish.
