Sleeper question??

I am going to be making my car sleeper and was wondering if I buy the 99spec parts and just the parts to make it like the 99 spec. Is it considered still sleeper or not. Let me know.

Absolutely not.

The US Society of Sleeper Vehicles (USSSV) has very stringent guidelines about what makes a vehicle a true sleeper.

Section XVII, paragraph 3 states:

"Under no circumstances will the vehicle in question be considered a sleeper if any exterior component including, but not limited to, the front fascia, front and rear spoilers, wheels, exhaust tip, sideskirts, hood, or rear bumper is replaced with the equivalent from the country of the vehicle's origin."

I know a couple of buddies with bone stock exterior (stock rims, stock height, no r-1/99-spec lips, etc) wtih single turbos pushing 400+ hp. Their paints' not in too great a shape, either
Now THAT would be considered a sleeper FD, if there is such a thing....

Basically anything that doesn't look like it can go as fast at is actually does. IE a Pinto with...oh...a 502 in it.

sleep·er ( P ) Pronunciation Key (slpr)
n.

One that achieves unexpected recognition or success...

I don't think an FD can be in that park as 1) it already looks fast, and B) people who know expect it to be fast.

I think RX7s in general would be tough to make be sleepers..... All of them seem like they should have some claim to speed. Maybe not "fast as Hell" speed... But they do have the "Hey, I'm kinda fast" look heh....

FD's could never be sleepers everyone knows they are fast. A sleeper would be the video I have of a AE86 with a 20b in it. Thats a sleeper. Turbo miata could be considered a sleeper a year ago but now with the mazdaspeed miata it would be hard pressed to consider it now. Turbo integra or civic are sleepers. Maybe even the 240sx with the sr20det swap done. But not an FD.

yeah I agree.... the fd is way too sexy and fast looking..... even people who don't know what kind are car they are know that they must be fast just by looking at them. I got people coming up to me at the gas station that ask what kind a car it is...before I even tell them they are like it must be really fast

so I don't think you can make it a sleeper.... you can go with a nice clean look that's not too flashy.... but a sleeper it will never be

The FD is anti-sleeper. Its just not possible to assume anything less when looking at the car.

How about the NSX though? Its like sleeper...but in a different way. Its sleeping on the hp.

Yea I think 7s just aren't sleepers, I get people all the time that think my car is hella fast when they hear what I have, or see what I have, and they think I'm just being modest when I say it's really not all that fast, but IMO...my NA really isn't fast by most standards

Do you explain specifically what type of 7 you have? Or do you just say "an RX-7"? Most people assume you drive an FD when you say the latter.

When I tell people I have an 85 Rx7, they too come back with the whole "you have a sports car look." Or they think of "Fast and the Furious." But I just don't see any Rex as a sleeper, just looks too smooth. my isn't nearly as "hopped up" as others here, but then again, it doesn't look like ****.

There is more than one level of "fast". A stock FD is reasonably fast and looks the part. But one that looks stock and is mother-f---ing fast is a sleeper.

There is another reason people build sleepers. You are more likely to be able to enjoy driving your car if it isn't screaming "LOOK! LOOK! I'M FAST! I'M FAST!". An unfortunate reality of attracting the attention of onlookers is that some of those onlookers have badges and police cars. If you beg for attention, you will get it.

FD's will never be sleepers no matter how dirty it is or how stock looking or paint faded it is. Most people you race know what it is and know that it is fast. Its like saying a supra is a sleeper. It will never ever happen.
