Simplest good sound setup -ditching bose

i'm ditching my bose setup and i want to replace it with a very simple setup. namely a basic head unit and just 2 front speakers. the stock CD player died a long time ago and it would be nice to have one.

so is this ok? how crappy would it be? my bose thing barely works and i don't know about the center channel. suggestions for speakers? thanks for any input.

Depends on your budget. If you got 3 grand to spend on a speaker, I would say focal utopia's, which are the best speakers. If your on a budget, its a matter of what sounds best to you. Go to best buy or sound advice and just listen to the current speakers. I have an alpine deck and 2 alpine type x speakers and it sounds awesome, speakers were a little bit over $200 each.

There are a lot of good speakers out there. To say Focals are the "best" is strictly subjective.

And before you recommend any speakers, make sure that they will fit. Mounting depth up front is very shallow at only ~2.5". Most if not all component sets have woofers w/ magnets that are too big.

i knew the depth was a limiting factor, is 2.5 a hard number Speedking?

it seems that you can have decent sound from just two speakers then, or would you say spending ~$400 on speakers is necessary? I was hoping for less than that total.

any big problems with installing yourself? i've had the doors apart and i really want to make sure i rip out all wiring thats not in use, especially all the junk hooked up to the bose hose.

I don't know the actual clearance down to the 1/8", but 2.5" is your "general" limit.

You don't have to spend $400 for speakers. FDs are noisy cars. Compound that w/ an exhaust/intake/aftermarket suspension/BOV, etc. (if you have them), and you have an even noisier car. Spending that much money on speakers isn't practical IMO, and you'd be better off getting some mid-level speakers and an amp.

Try 5" drivers in the doors with seperate tweeters, keep the bose rear sub, but tear the amp off it, and run the entire system off a 4 channel amp.

I played around with a few setups and am currently using 6" door speakers with seperate tweeters, a 4/300 JL amp and the Bose sub. It sounds very balanced in the way that well designed premium factory systems do and it's loud enough to drown out the ususal rotary noises. The only thing I would change is the size of the door speakers. There isn't much depth so it is very difficult to utilize a 6" driver. I prevously had a 5" from the same manufacturer and it sounded about the same because the enclosures were better.

If you are really on a budget, the best thing to do is simply buy a cheap headunit and wire it like we suggest in the wiring diagram

cheap is good and thats definitely the cheapest. i think i'll try that with the stock speakers and see how bad it is and go from there. i'm content with how it sounds now in its sorry state, just wanted to ditch anything non-essential and have a cd player. i'm too dumb to be a hard core audio guy...but i can read a wiring diagram. thanks y'all and for the wondrous wiring diagram

Hey there, I'm new to this site and was recommended by my mechanic to check it out. Does anyone know what type of system is the best and most economical for a 1994 RX-7? The whole thing needs to be scrapped, CD player and all. Please let me know what's best for this type of car. I don't want to spend thousands for a decent system, however, I enjoy a deep, basy, sound. Thanks, Sam1967

There's a variety of different things you can do. Upgrading stock speakers, installing a rear sub, etc. There are plenty of people here who have had a small custom enclosure made for their FD.

You could always even get creative and upgrade the 2 subwoofers inside the factory Bose snake.
