Well maybe its the color of your car, cause I know there are tons of others who have FD's who have gotten nailed.

PVerdiek, the whole point is, it shuts off when it senses the detector detector, and the sensors are not visible. Before I waste my time explaining it to you, why don't you go peruse the site and read about it yourself before you decide you know all about it.

Ok, lets examine some of the pics I've taken.

Here's the ever so popular 15mph school zone

YOU try going 15mph. Yes, it is PATHETICALLY slow.

Here's a nice HUGE stretch....of course we are only allowed to go 45mph

Here's the same stretch at 9:30 in the morning

Look at that straightaway. Come on, this is EASY 80mph territory without getting into trouble. 100+ if people were considerate eough to not get in your way.

Here's another "TOO SLOW" speed limit.

Come on. 35mph? This is an easy 50mph area. Of course, they give us these god awful limits, and so our friendly nike cops LOVE to hide next to the palm trees.

Moral of the story, there are PLENTY of places where you can almost do double the speedlimit. When I was in Germany, there was a long straight OFF ramp from the hwy going towards a small town. Believe it, OFF the hwy, this small road had NO speedlimit. Until it got to the town, of course.

On a side note, I had my first laser jamming incident today. I picked up the Escort ZR3 Shifter system a few months ago. To the best of my knowledge the Houston cops weren't running laser yet, but I wanted it for trips.

So I am cruising, in the middle of lane out of 5, at about 11:30, doing 60-70, I forget (s. on 59 about to go s. on 610). All of a sudden I hear this loud warbling noise, brake down to 55 and sure enough it was the ZR3 going off. I looked around, but didn't see any cops. I had to exit in 1/4 mile anyway.

Not enough to judge effectiveness, but interesting to hear it go off...

Actually, I did peruse the site. What I saw was a singularly lame picture of a red porsche, with not so helpful arrows pointing at the nose intakes. What they didn't show was a closeup of the sensors, to help one judge how truly hidden they are. I doubt K40 is mounting them inside the bumper, because the plastic would interfere with detection to a degree. Instead, they are in some non-obvious position. At that point, I decided I knew all I needed to know about it.

With the steadfast refusal of some states to allow radar detectors, and the continued tech war in detection equipment, including new detector detectors that are better than VG-2, paying the cost of that system seems futile. The K40 isn't a magical invisible system.

You know the most common ways troopers in Virginia check for detectors? They come up behind you, hit the radar and see if you brake. And if you think those police are going to let you go after that scenario, then you are seriously mistaken.

That is why I believe your recommendation of that system is seriously flawed.

As for cheaply helping your odds with Laser, have curvy dark car, run without a front plate, and stick with the popups. When using laser, the police need a flat reflective surface. The plate is their 1st option, their 2nd is the headlights. If that doesn't work they'll go for the rear plate as you pass by.

Houston HAS to be using laser. They're bigger ******** than the Austin PD, and I know we get lasers out here more than radar.

The reason I recommend that system is the fact that we know all radar detectors are detectable to some degree, correct? Even the V1. So here's my reasoning. Say you get pulled over for speeding. If its illegal to have a radar detector, what do you have to do? You have to take it off your windshield, hide it, and hope its not looked for, since you probably don't have time to hide it well. So as you're doing this, the cop is right behind you, staring into the back window of your car. So he could see you take it off, then you're having to explain what you were doing (which seeing someone fumble around their car frantically after being pulled over would scare most cops and cause other unwanted problems). The K40 is completely hidden other than the two LEDs, which look relatively normal. The control is hidden, and can be said to control the alarm or something along those lines. To find the actual sensors, he's actually going to have to look in the front grill or behind the bumper, as well as behind. The chance of him seeing a small black box and knowing its a radar detector is probably slim. How many would actually look there in the first place? So they literally have to tear the car apart to figure it out, which in most states, I believe, requires special circumstances greater than probable cause (Depends on the state).

So my point is, the radar detector is already hidden, so you don't have to hide it yourself. If you're going to get a radar detector, regardless of the legality, why would you get one that has to sit on your windshield? Seems to me like that would be pretty obvious, versus the K40.

Oh yeah, as far as the laser jammers being illegal in several states, its true, but I believe it depends on how the jammer functions.

Of course, just because its illegal in some states doesn't mean you can't sell it at all (to whoever assumed it was illegal all over).

With regards to previous posts on going fast in slow speed limit areas.

The speed limit in our neighborhood is 25mph. Although it is hard to go that slow, we have no sidewalks on most of the streets so the kids and everyone walks in the street. People walking dogs on leashes and groups of kids on bikes, whom you first see when you go around a curve could not be avoided at 40-45 mph. As a result, I try to drive no faster than 25mph after I make the turn into our neighborhood. Although it takes me a few minutes longer(at most) to get home, those minutes are well worth some kids life.

Also, a neighbor's kid recently had his car vandalized one night. All the tires had been flattened and the words "Slow Down" were spray painted on his hood of the Mustang GT. I've seen this car speed down the road in front of my house many, many times... so although I can never approve of such vandalizm, in this case, it might have saved a kids life... maybe even one of my own kids?

As for radar/laser and speeding... I got my first speeding ticket, in more than 5 years, a few months ago on I-10 in Louisiana. There is a stretch of interstate which is called the Atchafalaya Swampway, and on it the speed limit is only 55 mph. Almost all the rest of the interstate is 65-70 mph, so I had my cruise set on 74mph. The ticket cost me over $300.

Flybye,

I saw the pics earlier, but at the time of my writing this the pics had exceeded their max bandwidth, so I'm just going by memory.

I can safely say that while some of those roads are rather straight, and the distance is pretty visible, I would never be doing double the speed limit in any of those areas, especially with trees lining the side of the road. Again, I would more accept 10-15 over on barricaded highway, but doing double almost anywhere else is beyond me. To each his own though.

To add to this idea, I was overtaken on a two-lane road the other day, where the passerby was doing roughly 55 (35 limit) judging by my speed. I assume that I was going "too slow", but they nearly missed an oncoming bus coming over a hill in the opposite direction of traffic, cutting me off in the process. They then proceeded to speed on ahead as I caught the next short light watching them pull into the distance. I continued driving at my speed, and sure enough at the next light before the main intersection, I pulled up next to the same guy who had previously been driving wrecklessly. Case in point; speeding, especially through areas such as this and other residential/business ones, rarely gets you anywhere faster, if at all but a few minutes, which could be the difference in serious injury or worse.

ok, beat this.. 65 in a 25 without a radar detector
the 25 is a lake road.. only that speed cause exhaust kills the enviornment.
but doing that, and only getting a verbal warning from a cop is awesome.
but the moral of this story is. don't get tickets

Wow, such an old thread! I dont even remember posting in here lol

But yeah, V1 is really a good radar detector. I like how the beeps get faster as the actual sight of cop is made.

I tried to make a video of a couple of pulls but thanks to the V1, i knew there was a cop behind me (i have a bad habit of NOT looking behind me if i decide to speed, i need to start doing this). I usually gun it getting onto the highway but i had to baby it in there. So it ended up being a boring video lol.

Soo, does this radar go behind the tractor beam, or next to the flux capacitor? hehehe, I would get one, but I don't speed. It would be nice to know were an officer is, but if I don't speed, I'm straight. I get that sometimes one would stare at the speedometer and watch the kneedle go, and thinks its cool to drive like its a "Getaway in Stockholm", but, thats not me. In this situation, and in my opinion, autocross, and drifting would be ideal, the ones that participate are in an empty parking lot were its alright to get buck wild. People who street race try to take the precaution to not do it around anyone, or near any residence. But once you go fast and get away with it, they tend to do it more, and push themselves. Thats when it all goes wrong. But, ITS KINDA MY OPINION!!(i did scream at my monitor) its your life, your responsibility.

wont save you if your speeding enough that a cop doesnt need a radar.. they only go off when they turn the radar on.

i got one for christmas, i would of loved to keep it, but brought it back for 2 reason.. car needed parts so i used that for the money, and when i passed the traffic lights with the cameras which there are lots where i drive, it would go off like crazy no matter what setting i put it at... if i ever was going to go on a road trip, no doubt in my mind, i would buy this again, because it did work

Has its downfalls...

My buddy has one of these in his M6. Its let him down twice. One time we were on the highway going 5-10 over and next thing we know were passing the Ohio State Patrol sitting in the center median. No warning from the Valentine and I saw he was using a gun luckily no ticket. Next time same highway going 80 in 65 and once again no warning Local Police shot us with laser gun and pulled us over. He has it mounted bottom center of windshield.

Im referring to the V1

ive always been a fan of video comparison tests. i personally am going to get the V1 because of directional notification (here in Houston they have 6 lanes of freeway on each side to hide) and there are plenty of undercover cops just waiting to pull you over..

reason i wouldnt go with the escort is i have no need for the gps(even though it is a very nice feature) and also i like getting things my friends dont have ;D

also i notice some people who say the valentine has failed.. probably the same people that mount it right in the middle of their windshield. You gotta mount it very precisely for 360 degree detection!
