Review on Prosport Gauges

A few weeks ago I was looking for gauges and found some Megan Racing gauges for cheap. I made a post on another forum to see how they liked the gauges, because I liked how they look (Black face when off).

Mostly everybody over there recommended the Prosport Performance Gauges, because you can adjust the face color to White or Amber (Which blends in beautifully with the Mazda OEM amber light). So I went ahead and bought 3 Electrical 52mm gauges (Volt, Water Temperature, and Fuel Pressure) at their website:

http://www.prosportgauges.com/

I spent only $118 for the 3 gauges and figured it was worth a shot since I spent much less than 1 Defi gauge. At first I was skeptical about the price and thought "Hey, you get what you paid for" and figured they would be inaccurate and cheap looking.

After I placed the order, they quickly e-mailed me and notified that the gauges would be shipped out the next day. The box quickly arrived 3 days later. I also ordered a DIN panel for 3 gauges off of Ebay to hold the gauges.

When I opened the box, I was blown away by the quality of the gauges. They look awesome!

Both the fuel pressure and the water temperature gauges come with sending units. Installation is easy because they provided instructions for installation. Red goes to switched 12V, Black to ground, and Green to the respective sending unit. They also have 2 extra wires, amber and white. They wires can be connected to get 4 possible combination of colors for the face of the gauge. You can have it set so that the face is:

1. Amber when on, Amber when lights are on
2. Amber when on, White when lights are on
3. White when on, Amber when lights are on
4. White when on, White when lights are on

Here's what the gauges look like with the white face

Here's what the gauges look like with the amber face

So far I have it set to both Amber, but I'm going to make it White when on, and Amber when lights are on.

Here's what the gauges look like installed

Here's what the gauges look like when off (Oops, got some of that Vinyl cleaner stuff on the plastic)

Here's the gauges on with amber face during daylight. They are actually VERY easy to see even in daylight. They will be a lot easier to see once I hook up the other wire for white face during daylight

I hooked up the water temperature gauge and it is VERY accurate. I compared the temperature gauge to the water temperature readings from the PCM and the temperature is pretty much dead on. It is way better than the Mazda's dummy gauge. Now I can have peace of mind knowing that I have an accurate gauge because previously I ran into overheating problems and the Mazda's gauge does not have the #'s for temperature. Just "C" and "H".

Tomorrow I will hook up the fuel pressure sender line and wire it up for white face during daylght.

Overall, I give Prosport Performance:

1. Easy of Installation 5/5
2. Aesthetics 5/5
3. Price 5/5
4. Accuracy 5/5
5. Speed of Delivery 5/5
6. Response to E-mails 5/5

They offer fast e-mail turn around time and fast shipping! I definitely recommend them! A+

They also offer a myriad of other gauges such as boost gauge, oil temperature, oil pressure, etc...

I had Defi gauges but changed over to these and I don't plan on going back. They are working on a wideband gauge also according to their website, and I'm sure it'll be inexpensive and just as good as others.

I ordered an oil temp gauge just to see what theyre like. I need to buy other gauges but I want to see what the quality and all that other stuff is like before buying all of my gauges from them. I'll post my experience with them once my gauge arrives in the next few days. Did you wire up the fuel pressure gauge? Do you have any pictures of the water temp sensor?

Heres a picture of their Premium peak/hold guages installed in an FD. I think this person is on the forum. I believe the Premium gauges come with these mounting cups/hoods.

From their website:

The mounting hoods come with all of their gauges. I have the non premium and they came with the gauges.

Also, I have my fuel pressure hooked up. It is dead accurate with the mechanical fuel pressure gauge under the hood.

I received my performance series oil temp gauge in the mail but mine is defective. The pointer (part that lights up red) is not aligned straight with its base (thing that moves it).

Check out the picture:

Both pictures are of the same gauge. I drew a straight line down the middle to show how crooked the pointer actually is. It looks like the pointer needle wasnt positioned correctly when it was assembled as is not pointing straight down. I e-mailed ProSport about this and I hope I can get an exchange. I was about to order all of my gauges from them but decided to order just one to see what they look like personally.

Besides the problem with the needle, everything looks good. Another minor thing that I wasnt 100% excited about was the ring of light around the dial. Its not a big deal but it would have been nice to have that excess light blocked around the edges just like Defi, Greddy, HKS, and other gauges do.

I'll keep you guys updated on this and let you know how their customer service deals with this.

Depending on how ProSport handles my situation, I will buy some premium gauges and takes pictures & measurements of them.

The perfomance gauges dont fit in my RE-Amemiya steering column pod because of their length. At least the oil temp gauge I currently have doesnt. Judging by RISEN's pictures, the perfomance gauges are all the same size depth wise. Using a performance boost gauge with the RE gauge pod is out of the question unless you start hacking stuff off.

I have the boost/vac, fuel pressure, and exhaust temp. The only one that has worked ok for me is the exhaust temp. The boost vac sender broke from installing the very tight hose that was included and the guage is off about 2 lines and the fuel pressure is ok but when the headlights are on the boost and fuel pressure fluctuate all the time, until the headlights are off. I have yet to get ahold of them to find the cause though.
