Repainting My Beater

Hey, I have a burgandy 91 240SX Fastback that I want to repaint. I was thinking of just doing some of the stuff my self, and just get a coat of black paint from maaco, its my beater so I don't really care. What I was wondering was mainly about wet sanding and masking. I have heard of wetsanding, and heard that it makes your paint stick ALOT better, but I have searched online and nobody has a tutorial on how to do it, I was wondering if someone could link me or explain to me. Also, I am installing new rear and front fenders, so would I have to wetsand those as well when I am going to get it painted ? About masking, how hard is it ? Do I have to cover large areas like the front window, rear window and **** like that ? Will regular masking tape work or no ? I have never done masking before so should I just leave it up to maaco and just do some of the **** myself ( like removing the emblems and stuff like that ) thanks for any help.

If you don't care about the paint, I'd say take it to Maaco and have them do it for like $500 or whatever. A friend of mine had a front lip for his talon installed and painted there, and they did a **** poor job. Paint flaked off every month or so, but they kept repainting it for free. Just to warn you.

Thats why I want to wet sand it so that it will stick, because even though its free, I don't feel like going back every month, wasting my time for stupid ****. I do care about the paint, just that it looks semi-decent, If I didn't I wouldn't want to paint it in the beginning. Is their any tutorials or some **** online to show how to wet sand ? Thanks.

Just like regular sanding, only w/ water. It really is that simple. It is usually used in between coats to make the finish coat smoother, then on the finish coat with progressively finer grit paper to make it shine like glass.

Ohh, so would it be of any use if I wet sanded my stock paint job ?? From using like a 100 grit, to a 500 grit, and then like eventually to 1000 grit and then just take it to maaco so they can paint it ? I heard that wet sanding lets the paint stick better or some **** like that, thanks.

Start with 240 Grit => 400 Grit => 600 Grit.

3M also has a product called SCUFF-IT, that is used in conjunction with a scotch-brite pad to clean, abrade and prep a surface for paint:

IF you choose to go the MAACO route, the best thing you can do is to remove all of the trim. lights etc. That you don't want paint on. Their masking jobs suck!

I have a car that the previous owner sent the car to MAACO in Apr of 2002. RX-7 was painted silver, already the pain has lost its gloss and started chalking and streaking.
