Removing Interior Trim Fasteners

Hey guys,

This is my first time really tearing apart my interior, and I've run into these fasteners that I'm having trouble getting out. Most of the people I see on here have the ones that the center pops out of to let you remove them, but these don't seem to do that. They're ribbed on the inside with what looks to be a metal insert.

Any tips for removing these before I break all of my plastics would be greatly appreciated.

According to the parts manual, it doesn't look like that's the right fastener. Pliers it is...

That looks like an aftermarket replacement fastener. You most likely won't be able to remove it without breaking the fastener or mangling it beyond use, so the removal strategy is to get it out without doing harm to those expensive trim pieces it secures.

Start by getting a plastic trim prying tool under the head of the fastener, and try to pull it out a bit. Goal is to get it up high enough so you can get a diagonal cutter in there to snip its head off. Then you can deal with the ribbed shaft part of the fastener after the trim pieces are removed.

That looks quite similar to these:

The best tool I've found for removing them is this style of wire terminal crimper:

The ones I use are the absolute cheapest of the cheap and came from a dollar store, but they slide under the head better than pliers could hope to.

Thanks, guys. I ended up using a combination of those methods and got them out without breaking anything (other than some skin on my hands). I'll be putting everything back together with the correct parts.
