Rear speaker help.

Ok, I just pulled out the rear speakers in my '86 GXL and it's a 6.5" mount with 4" installed, there are 5 wires going to the speakers, but I don't see any amps there, where are the amps located? If they're not in the car, which wires do I run to the new speakers? Or do I have to rewire everything from the head's leads back?

The amp is inside that enclosure that the 4" is mounted in.

If you are removing the enclosure (which I recommend) you will hook the new speaker up to the Blue and Blue/orange (passengers side) and brown and brown/white (drivers side).

Or if you are set on using the lame enclosure, pop it open, and use the appropriate same wires as mentioned above, just run them to the speaker instead of the circuit board.

So I just cap off the other 3 wires that are going into the enclosure?

Or I could just not plug in the wiring harness, duh.

Important though, how can I mount my Infinity 6.5" in the rear? They're too small as it is, so it won't fit even with the adapter plate that the speakers came with, where can I get a fitting adapter plate to stuff 6.5" in the rear speaker bays?

When I bought my infinity 6.5's for my rear (86' GXL) they came with a white adaptor plate to stretch across to the original holes... and I did keep the enclosure without the amps I sealed it all off with good ol duct tape to make a nice sealed enclosure.. sounds pretty nice now

Your best bet is to run down to your local metal scrape yard/recycler and get a sheet of aluminum, and make your own.

You want something that is at least 1/16 or an inch thick, so don't get any flashing, get the real stuff.

I usually also put down a layer of latex or silcon glue between the strut tower and the custom made aluminum speaker plate, to help avoid any rattles or vibration.

I don't have the tools required to cut metal or fabricate anything.

I was looking to do the same thing. On ebay they are selling a set of adaptor plates, but I dont want to pay $30 for them. Icemark, what tools does one require to do that?

I used a dremmel tool and lexan to make brackets for 6X8's. Sounds good and no rattles without any glue or foam.

I talked to Ultimate Electronics and they said they have an adapter plate for $8.85 or so per pair, check them out if you can. I'm going tomorrow.

Power drill, drill bits, and a jig saw with a metal cutting blade.

Tools that everyone should own anyway and under $100 for Black & decker versions of the two at the ol' Home Depot.
