Radio does not work after storage
Radio does not work after storage
the stock radio on my 90 Rx 7 does not operate after winter storage--lights up but no sound.
Any ideas what it might be?
What are recommendations for replacement?
thanks

weird... take off the dash and check the wires in the back. maybe you had a mouse gnawing through them :Ponce your back there jsut take an old speaker and hook it up directly to the back and see if it works. if it does you know the radio is fine and its your cars wiring, if it doesnt then I ahve no idea... maybe an internal fuse or something?
pull out the radio...and at the harness..."pop" the speakers. By this I mean..take a small batter and tape a wire to each end + & -...then touch the pairs of speaker wires...if the speakers pop...then the wiring is good and the speakers should at least make noise. If they do not...then most likely there is a short in the wiring....If they do pop...then there is most likely something wrong with the deck.
Mine has done the same thing. After hours of reserching, I found that it is the Ground on the PCB inside the unit. Let me explain, Mine will turn on intermidantly(sp) but the presets will be gone. When I get in the car and push the "FM" button to get it to power up sometimes it will sometimes it won't. I drive and keep pusing the button and soon it comes on.....with no presets.
I pulled the radio and using the wire diagram on T-93 and T-94 from the FSM I have found that I have power to the unit all the time.
The unit grounds through the chassis of the Unit. So when you screw it in that is the ground. I tried adding a 2nd ground by putting a wire under the screws and grounding it to the Tranny bolts (you'll see them if you pull your radio) but this didn't work. After completley taking apart the radio and seeing the green PCBs inside the only other option is the PCB ground plane is corroded and I have lost ground.
Sorry but I can't confirm this just yet as I have not taken the radio out again since the failed 2nd grounding attempt. But this is the only viable explanation.
If you are like me the stock radio is plenty good enough. I don't want to spend bux on an aftermarket. I want my stocker to work so I am still willing to work on it.
I wish some EEs would be able to confirm what I think, but everybody just tells me to replace the old POS.

Just an-on
A PCB ground plane is an exposed piece of copper inside the Green FR4 laminate that a mounting screw would make contact with. I am thinking that just a simple un-screwing and re-screwing the mounting screws would re-establish the ground and the radio would be fine.
