Question Ported or Sealed Sub-box: Advice?

Hey everyone,

I've decided to change-up my "temporary" stereo system with something I think will be more permanent for the FD.

Quick Specs on my current setup:

Eclipse Single Deck CD/MP3 Player

MB Quartz Speakers

JL Audio 300/4 AMP

JL Audio 12 W1

Quick Specs on "in-progress" setup:

Alpine Double Din In-Dash DVD/CD Player

MB Quartz Speakers (Keeping these )

JL Audio 13 W 6

JL Audio 500/1

JL Audio 300/4

Anyways, I'd like to know if it's worth it to have the box ported or just to keep it sealed? Currently my setup is sealed, but doesn't make enough power IMO. I KNOW for a fact the 13 W6 will be a big step-up in that regard, but I'm not sure if I should go the extra distance and have the box ported. Any advice???

I know the disadvantages of porting include price and significant weight increase, but in the long-run would it still be worth it? Would like to hear from people with experience and greater knowledge.

Thanks in advance,

Rizwan

P.S. I'm selling my JL 12W1 w/box and my JL 300/4 AMP (Silver Color). I'll also be selling my vinyl hatch cover with this setup. PM me if anyone is interested.

Here's a quick picture of the current setup:

Riz, that 13 W6 is gonna push a lot of air. I hope that theres enough room back there to utilize tha subs potential. From our talks, u like it loud. Sooo, ported would probably be best for tha low rumble..but like I said, I dunno if theres enough room back there for such a big subwoofer to gain its full potential.

That amp in your picture looks like an e series amp, not a slash series. Do you have any better pictures of the amp you are trying to sell?

I am running a JL Audio 450/4 and a 10w3v3...with the Pioneer TSC130R components...I can't imagine needing MORE bass. A 13W6 would be brutal in an FD...

If I was you i would try a 12w3v3 before moving to a 13w6. The w3 would probably be MORE than adequate with our space restrictions. The 12w1 is entry level IMO. The w3 is a BIG step up...

You will need a lot more power to the 12w3 than that 300/4 could provide bridged. I would sell the 300/4 and get a dedicated sub amp with somewhere around 500w RMS to push the w3 and a smaller 2 channel to run your components.

Edit: Just saw your proposed setup...The 500/1 is a good amp and will suit your needs...

I would start there and move up from there. I think jumping to the 13w6 is going to be overkill, that you wont have enough space for it and if you did, it would be way too much for your front stage.

In my eyes, the RX7 is not a car to put a system in. I did a custom install for my speakers. I made speaker pods for my midbass and then I have the tweeters in the doors. I added a 12w7 that I fiberglassed in, but it just took up too much space and I didn't want that. Here are some pictures of my work I did.

Before it was finished so you could see the space it took up, the amps were infront of the enclosure

Had plenty of airspace and sounded good, just the added weight and rattling it added to the car was something unneeded for the car. The car is still deadened though and helps out a lot for road noise.

I agree. I freed up trunk space going to this system (added a little weight though), and got a lot better sound than the stock bose setup. Also it is nice to have the power to overcome the exhaust/engine/road noise when you spend a lot of time in the car in traffic (sucks but the 7 will be my dd for 6 months to a year).

I just think it isn't a car to go HUGE with a system. The small amount of space and rattly nature just doesn't bode well for big subs with lots of power. Not to mention running tons of power to amps is gonna strain an already strained electrical system...

Agree with tha guys above. But, I completely understand how Riz is when it comes to sound systems (we talked in person). He likes a lot of bass, and tha current setup isn't low enough for him...but a 13w6 is gonna be overkill.

I looked at some pics of guys different setups and I dont think ur gonna get away with porting with such a huge sub, even with a 12w6. Tha only way I can see this possible is if u make a box that'll extend tha sub's box up and almost flush with tha entire hatch, and have tha sub facing towards u. You could then utilize a 13w6 ported...but thats not a streetable setup.

I'd say if u wanna go crazy..u can still buy my 12w6 and that'll be more then enough power, even in a sealed box. What I can do for ya is we can setup my system in sum1's car and have u listen to my setup..crisp and clear with a LOT of thump. I know ur buddies have tha 13w7's and w/e, but u should listen to mine with tha 1000/1 JL Audio amp. It sounds amazing...AND its SEALED, not ported.

hmmmm, where to begin on this one, the fd is a great car for a SQ system, i have been through 4 system and my next one is going to be ridiculous, but maybes thats just my love for car audio. If you port your box which would have to be fairly large and more than likely not fit your going to get more of a punch bass especially with the w7, where if you go with a w6 sealed it will be more clean and tight but wont be as loud. I say get a 8w7 or 10w7 feed it some nice power and you will be more than happy especially since the 7 has such limited cabin space.

The amp is actually an "e4300" four channel amplifier. I plan on making an actual F/S thread for my entire setup for a very good price. Since I won't be needing the sub, box, vinyl, or amp anymore I plan on selling everything as a package.

Thanks for all the input guys. I plan on taking my car to my sound shop next week to see if they can keep my current system look/setup with the 13w6. I've decided against having it ported for the issues of weight and space needed.

I think what most people don't understand is that this is NOT my daily driver. Infact, I have been averaging less than 2000 miles a year since I purchased the car awhile back. I don't drive the car in rain/snow or any other bad weather conditions. Also, I plan on entiring the car into shows so I believe an adequate sound system is necessary.

Finally, regarding the trunk space, I never use it. I had the spare and all accessories removed sometime ago and ever since I put the system in, I haven't used the hatch for anything other than the sound system. I'm also powering everything up with a second battery so I'm not too concerned about any electrical issues.

I'll wait until next week and see what works best for my needs.

Later,

Riz

For anyone interested, I made a F/S thread for my previous sound system setup. Here's the link to the thread:

Thanks!
