RotorMotor... you think the GTC front end is emasculating for the FD?

The plate holder on the 99 may be functional, but it looks like an afterthought. It definitly does NOT flow with the sleek lines of the car. It's like the luggage racks mounted on the trunks of the old Italian and British convertibles; some people like them and others hate them.

I can't image putting any front end on my car with a big brick implanted in it.... the plate box is terrible ooking. I can't believe Mazda did it that way. Since there'll never be a front plate on my car (even ithough its the law here), I can't see using it that way.

I couldn't care less if its "authentic" or not, but its too bad a flexible plateless version isn't made.

Pettit Front End

I had the Pettit front end installed on my car several months ago and love it. Haven't had any problems and the fit is superb. I too wondered about fiberglass versus plastic but decided since the fiberglass wasn't close to the ground, I'd be all right. The '99 front lip is the part that's close to the ground but it's plastic. Beware though - the '99 lip is much closer to the ground than the stock lip and you will scrap it. I've replaced the rubber tape that lines the front end several times. It's a minor inconvenience though and the tape can be purchased for $7 at Home Depot (Scotch brand rubber mastic tape in the electrical department).

WOW. See, there is good fitment and then there is good fitment. David, that there is an example of installation and paint done RIGHT. Everyone, if you don't have the resources to do it RIGHT, don't do it at all (there is no shame in being stock!).

Looks beautiful David. And I must say, those RO_JAs seem to set the car off nice as well.

If you have a side shot can you post it?

david haynes: can you tell me more about this tape you are talking about? what is it used for? is it to attach the lip??? or does it just go under it for some reason? thanks

ps after seeing those pics im starting to question the mazda bumper. i wonder how the aerodynamics at really high speeds are affected by the square on the front of the mazda one? it must create a good amount of air restance at very high speeds. maybe pettits is actually better........

when you get the front lip brand new it comes with this rubbery tape thats about an inch wide that wraps around the front of the lip to keep it from getting scratched up... but like david said you do have to replace it every once in a while because the tape definately gets beat up.

jmo87 is correct about the tape. It comes stock on thebottom of the lip for protection. It works well, but gets chewed up from scrapes. It's easy to replace though and the Home Depot tape is a perfect replacement for it.

I was asked to post some side pictures of my car. I'd post more, but I keep getting a proxy error and I've got to go. Will add more later but here is what I was able to download:

Thanks for the comments. I've tried to keep it stock/stealth looking. One final picture:

My FD was a VR base model (no wing), I was planning on getting the Petit front end... it would have looked similar to yours, but red (I sold it so that I could go back to school ). I'm partial to the stock/stealth look too. Beautiful car, one of my new favorites

Well, I've got the 99 front end package..

And I have checked into getting the under carrage and the brake ducts.. I don't think its worth it.. I got a quote for almost 500 for the bottom and brake ducts I haven't even gotten the quotes yet.. Unless you are dying to get your car into 99 spec, those parts don't do that much for the car.. I gave up because, with the front mount on the car, i was taking gamble if the 99 bottom would of worked out or not.. I now need to cut the stock bottom to get more air.. so, I'm glad I didn't spend that 500..

Also, you could build the brake duct your self if you really want them.. or could go with CWR.

Here is the pic.. this is older pic.. before the other fog and the emblems..

Has anyone tried a group buy on the Pettit front? If so what was the price and when can we do another one?!

This thread really gets me itching to get my car painted and to have that 99 replica front bumper!

I'm with BOTTLEFED on the group buy idea. The Pettit would be my first option.

herblenny: props on the car! looks great...now i think im in the stock 99 boat again after seeing yours. there is a company that included the ducts with the whole bumper assembaly (if you bought everything..fogs etc) but i guess that is a moot point for you now. was doing the FMIC bad?? i will be going FMIC but was worried that it wouldnt fit...glad to see yours worked out....by the way, what kind of FMIC is that? thakns
