The Plated one looks odd at best IMO. The lines of the nose are ruined by that ugly piece sticking out. Hell I don’t run a front plate as is...
Just a FYI it’s not so easy to just cut the holder out and patch. Its urethane and some of the best body shops haven’t mastered what you asking for.
I elected to get the replica Jason at the RX7 store sold without the holder. It is urethane but since it’s a copy of a 99 spec the nose it isn’t a perfect fit. But its dam close, my body shop guy made it fit good but it wasnt cheap.
I attached a few photos. On another note the air flow is defiantly better with the 99 nose compared to the 94 stock noses.

Play nice, its a personal preferance. Sports Compact car is on my side I never thought I would say that ...
Quote " Now came the time to install the brand-new '99 front bumper. The good news: All the openings on the front fascia were significantly larger than before and should, theoretically at least, allow more air-flow through the radiator and oil coolers. The bad news: The presence of a sinfully ugly front license plate holder Mazda integrated into the front bumper. "Why?" you ask. Beats us.
Our best guess is front license plate laws are far more strict in Japan than they are in the States. With this in mind, one could argue that Mazda's new bumper design, when garnished with the use-or-be-punished front license plate, allows more air flow through the radiator (and supposedly looks better) than a "normal" bumper equipped with a front plate mounted awkwardly by a generic bolt-on bracket assembly. Regardless, those who are blessed with a finer sense of aesthetics would feel it is a crime to desecrate the irreverent RX-7 with a front license plate.

i like the plateless better but will still cut off the plate on the real thing. i am a body man and could tell you myself it can be done. a friend of mine who owns an FD and happens to be a body man has cut his plate off too.. so it can be done.. urethane can be patched as long as it was prepaired right, fiberglass will stick to almost anything if prepaired right.. most likely will be completely reinforced will fiberglass

it basically comes down to whats legal in your town.
im starting to like the plateless ones, but still its not worth the hassle of giving the cops another reason to pull you over.

Plateless !!!! The plated front bumpers just look like a total afterthought IMO.A big square protrusion right on the front of a rounded body style car just looks wrong and out of place.

i like the plated but it looks weird, it just looks so much cleaner without it.. i never understood why they added that funky looking plate holder.. but again regaurdless im getting a plated but will most likely cut it off and fill it in
honestly tho, i think they should have done it like they did in the past. make it an option like they did here in the US, a little bracket for the people who liked it or easily removable for the guys who dont like it..
the 99spec looks like a damn push bumper like the cops have on there cars, not sporty if you ask me

I think the plated version looks better just adds a little something extra there even if it does kind of look like an after though.
In the end, however, it really all does come down to what is legal where you live.

listen, i just went to court for a plate in the window and won but lost for having a loud exhaust. however in the ordinace book it says a plate has to be SEEN from the FRONT of the car, nothing about being on the bumper. it has to be within 12 to 36 inchs and visible from the front of the car.. im sure all states are they same but anyway im from jersey..
the plated is nice but not as clean as a platless and makes the car look funny.. it just does not look as natural.. the plate holder is soooo big
