New Head Unit: Crappy Reception

I have a 87 T2.
I just installed a new Pioneer DEH-P8500MP head Unit. I don't get AM reception at all and FM is OK.
I hooked up a signal amplifier and still no AM reception.

I have the head unit hooked up to the antenna connection with the male plug.
There is also a female plug I assume goes to the windshield antenna.

Which plug goes to which antenna and which one is for AM?

What should I do to get AM reception?

Thanks
Ed

Hmm I have found a couple things:

1. FC's Reception is pretty bad, it may be due to old antenna, worn out parts/ gummed up wires and interfearance etc. I get pretty horrid reception compaired to my 90 eclipse, hell even my 83 starion gets better reception...

2. The head unit has a bunch to do with reception as well. Though I bought that same reciever for my girlfriend and put it in her 86 Volvo, and moved it into a 98 Subaru Forester... and in both places it got pretty decent reception...

3. You might check out your antenna wire... I am by no means an expert on the whole antenna area, as I hardly use the radio... Out of the 4 other people I know that have FC's, they all say their reception is crap and they just use an mp3/cd player..
