Whichever hood you choose, I recommend installing some heat shielding on the engine side of the hood. Heat from the motor is enough to melt some of the CF hood clear coats and cause them to run a little.

My VIS hood fits perfectly btw, and there are no functional problems from rain, whether parked or driving.

it has the rain gutters right? does that obstruct the cooling the hood provides at all?

VJ, vmount looks good but the re-a hood is not ideal for what your trying to accomplish. You will be better off with either a KS or MS hood IMO.

ks

ms

If you decide to get a replica be careful where you purchase it from. The cheap ones on ebay will fit like garbage and in the end you will spend more money buying one that fits properly. Believe me, this is coming from someone who has had 4 different hoods now.

Gold!!!!

Seibon makes a replica of the KS hood, in my experience seibon makes the best for replica hoods. I had a seibon hood before my authentic re-amemiya and the fitment on it was pretty good. Pricing isnt too bad on them either, nothing like $1700 for a re-a cf hood.

this is pretty much what i'm looking for, so i'd take i guess the KS hood and make the same type of vmount ducting...so does everyone agree the best hood for this type of setup is the KS? is there any other options that would work better?

This older panspeed hood would be ideal, panspeed still makes it but its $900ish plus s/h from the motherland

purerx7, I am just wondering why the REA style hood the OP originally mentioned will not work well for drawing air from the vmount ic and out of the hood? I was looking at the same hood for that purpose as well as just providing a way for heat to escape the engine bay. The foremost ducts appear to be positioned well for the IC and the rear two to help more with heat from the turbo/engine.

Anyone know why the original hood posted (REA) would not function well to both venting heat from the engine bay as well as provide a lower pressure area for the vmount to function better than an oem hood?

I don't think he said it *wouldn't* function. It just wouldn't be ideal.

I would have to guess it is because the size/position of the vents.

I personally would go with the FEED hood, but I'm sure that'd be even less ideal then the REA.

I guess I worded my statement poorly. I wonder what makes the panspeed more efficient as opposed to the REA hood. By the looks of it the front vents on the REA hood line up well with the intercooler and ducting could be made to create the same functionality as well as the rear two vents could help relieve radiant heat from the engine bay.

I have not had the opportunity to see the REA hood in person and since he has owned one I was hoping he could offer more specific advice as to why this would be challenging.

Thanks in advance.

I like the FEED hood to. really I like it probably better than every other hood out there but I think I have seen evidence that it offers little additional cooling effect over a stock hood.

Agreed on the cooling capabilities of the FEED hood. Sure somethings better then noting (stock), but yes there are better options out there if colling is your only ocncern.

As for where to get them, SEIBON offers a pretty complete range:
http://www.seiboncarbon.com/products...lId=RX-7&year=

...and any SEIBON dealer should be able to help - in fact, I believe Work Conepts (Forum Sponsor) is a dealer:

I've got a quick general question... I would like to replace my hood with carbon fiber - probably Seibon. I like the look of the ST. My primary goal is heat reduction. How much of a problem is rain leakage onto the motor or electronics... Particully if the car is parked outside in a heavy rain. Is this an issue?

Little to none. I had a Mazdaspeed hood for sometime and never had an issue even in heavy rains.

Most other members, even those with the Scoot Hood (ST Style) have reported no issues aswell (at least that I've heard).

If it *is* a major concern to you, I understand that rain guards ARE available fore some hoods- Not sure if Scoot is one of them, but it would probably be worth a search for 'rain guard'.

The VIS comes with a fiberglass "inner skin" which screws into the hood and plugs the vents. You wouldn't be able to close the hood with your setup.

The VIS fits like OEM, except for a close fit around the inside rear part of the headlight shrouds. However, the VIS clear coat began showing oxidation after only a year.

If any one is interested i have a couple asuka design hood (FG) i will be selling next week. Perfect for Vmount. Vacuum infused fiberglass, backing is similar to shine auto hoods but has a structural core.

Will have more info next week when i find out how many hoods i have and when my vendor account is active.
