Talking My new sub setup! (Bout time, right SpeedKing?!) - Not 56K Friendly!!

I thought I'd share a few pics of my new sub setup...I've been through quite a few sub setups, and I think I'm FINALLY happy...although I haven't given it the final tune yet. As Speedking can tell you, these pics are LONG overdue, but better late than never hehe.

The work was done by the Glen Burnie Tweeter (as per Roy's aka loudazzrx7 suggestion). They do excellent and very clean work, not to mention that the installer (Nick) is an old RX7Club forum member, but sold his FD a few years back and got a Z06. The good part is, he's very familiar w/ FDs, which is what I was looking for.

As you can see, they built me a custom sub enclosure, begining from the rear divider (which is still in place), fitting under the rear strut/harness bar, keeping the hatch cover, and flowing flush to the sides of the stock trunk plastics. The enclosure was sanded, primed, and painted to match the stock plastic. Very nice, not too shiny. Due to the size of the sub, they had to hack my hatch cover a bit, but they resurfaced the top of it. I'm gonna have the entire thing resurfaced (top and bottom) so it looks totally stock. Basically the top portion of the sub needs a few more inches. Other than that, everything's completely stock looking. As for the amps, cap, & x-overs, I had them mounted in the spare tire well, and they built me a brand new floor to cover it all. Much more sturdy than just leaving the stock hatch carpet on top of it. I think you can make out the line down the middle, showing how the floor is actually two parts, so you can raise one, the other, or both as necessary.

Lemme know what you guys think... I want honest opinions, from "I love it" to "That looks horrid" lol. I myself am very happy w/ it, esp. since I was going for a nice looking yet stealth/not too showy look, while being able to keep functional space of the trunk. I think I'm FINALLY done

Oh and for those who are wondering, that's the 12" JL W6V2. I'm a deep crisp bass freak, so a 10" W7 would miss some of the deep notes I'm looking for, and a 12" W7 is simply too powerful and requires way too much enclosure space... So I opted for the 12" W6V2 (built on the same technology, but vents from the surround only, not from the rear as well, like the W7s).

Are you going to put a cover/screen on it? I'd be afraid that anything in the trunk might puncture or damage the speaker.

Thanks....and that's very true. The thing is, I'm trying to go for a delicate balance...a "full" or "complete" RX7, yet still very nimble and performance oriented. You can always just gut your car to lose weight, but then the car becomes no fun on the street. Or you can leave everything stock, but you're a regular old stock FD. Basically, this is my attempt at making my car a balance of both...

Thanks. I REALLY want a sub cover, but here's the prob. You know what a sub cover for a JL looks like?

That's freakin NASTY if you ask me. Basically, you can't see the sub at ALL. I'd like to find a much nicer looking grill that you can actually see the sub from, something like this (but I don't know how/where to get it from):

But yea, I'm super paranoid about putting anything in the trunk now, cuz I don't want it messing up the sub

Pat, size matters I've had a 10" Alpine Type R (not bad at ALL for the money, mind you), and then I went w/ two 8" w7s. The 8's definitely sucked, unless all you did was listen to techno lol. What I'm looking for is that incredible deep bass that just shakes and vibrates throughout the whole car.... You don't hear it -- you FEEL it A 12" is what it takes to do it right (you could get that w/ a 10", but some very low notes won't be possible).

Nice sub and setup. In my Durango i got 2 12 inch W6V2 with the JL Audio 1000/1 Amp running then. Those things dont compare to anything I've heard yet for the size. What capacitor are you using? Cable size? Im running a 5 Farad Cap but it dims the lights noticably.

Yeah, it's about time you slacker! And how about cleaning out your garage?! It's a freaking mess!

But seriously Ramy, it looks good. For aesthetic purposes, I'd probably go w/ 2 smaller subs, but I know you were picky and wanted your low end a certain way and I hope that you're happy with the way it sounds.

And BTW, how was your trip out west, and - are you going to post pics???

Monster cables, and I'm running an alumapro 5 farad cap. I don't have ANY problems w/ lights flickering etc., and I use my sub HARD and A LOT In fact, I have a Greddy pulley set on my car, so the alternator is driven 25% slower, so the cap is definitely doing it's job on my car. I'm surprised your lights are flickering... Speedking, any ideas?

Ya damn straight I'm a slacker lol. And I'm proud of it! This is MY TIME to do diddly for a week or so, cuz come Tuesday, I'm back to the same old routine of trying to find time to eat, let alone sleep And yea, the garage is a mess. It's getting there tho. I'm trying to finish up the basement myself (it's unfinished), so that takes a bit of time, and obviously I gotta fit everything from the basement to one side, and the rest in the garage (for now).

But seriously Ramy, it looks good. For aesthetic purposes, I'd probably go w/ 2 smaller subs, but I know you were picky and wanted your low end a certain way and I hope that you're happy with the way it sounds.
Thanks Gil. I'm glad I got your stamp of approval Yea, asthetically two 8s or two 10s woulda looked better, but I woulda been throwing away my money if I didn't like how they sounded. I'm gonna see if my guy can tune the sub for me how I want it this week, and I'll get back to ya. Right now, it's awesome, BUT, definitely not tuned right. (damn I'm picky lol)

Mike, I'm running a JL 500/1 monoblock sub amp. The optimum power range for a 12w6v2 is just under 500 watts RMS. I assume you're interested in the 8w7, like the one I used to have. The optimum power range for a 8w7 is actually between 300 and 350 watts, RMS. JL actually recommends their JL 250/1 amp for a single 8w7 (http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/pdfs/8W7_MAN.pdf).

Still waiting patiently

Honestly, the setup looks great, but you stated something about a CF hatch- does this include getting rid of the stock glass as well? Either way, I'll be waiting to see this setup.

Adam, believe it or not, I STILL haven't installed 'em yet, cuz I'm STILL working on getting rails. No one seems to be able to get 'em. Go figure. I'm currently following a few leads, hoping one of them will pan out (please God). So we'll see soon enough.

Either way, def. hope to see you guys soon. It's been too long

Shinobi, dawg, I'm so free right now. I don't start class until Tueday, so just say when, and I'm there (the sooner the better cuz it looks like w/ this weather, snow's coming any day now, which means she's gonna have to retire )

Looks very clean, and I bet it sounds great. With reference to weight: My box/subs/amps combo weighs 62 lbs. I put the whole thing on a scale before putting it into the car because I knew I would get a lot of purists complaining about adding all the weight. I can barely keep the tires on the ground in 1st gear as it is much less with 62 fewer pounds over the rear axle.

If you care to read more about my setup: https://www.rx7club.com/interior-exterior-audio-26/my-jl-sub-install-my-fd-finished-6-hours-350000/

Hehe, looks more like 53 than 1001! Your math is pretty bad, bro! How did you get through calculus and trig.?! Pics look good w/ some awesome drift cars! Did you hook up w/ Jeff (Fufu) or other forum members when you were out here?

pianoprodigy, yea I saw the thread about your setup a lil while ago. Nice I'm just glad you ditched the bass tube. Def. a big diff in deep bass between that and subs! Oh and btw, I've always LOVED the pics of your car. Very very nice man!

No pun intended? :shaking head: lol. Horrible Gil...just horrible lol

Oh hush. I actually struggled through Calc...I was that kid who asked an average of 19 questions a class, and BARELY got an A, while my Asian friend came only for the midterm and the final and pretty much aced the class. Math's def. not my strong point tho. I thought you woulda figured that out by now. There's a reason why I'm not an Engineer. All I need to know is how to count how many gauze, instruments, and pints of blood we're using lol. Usually, these things remain in the double digit category, no integration or trig substitutions necessary

Oh and actually Gil, those pics are of the GT cars. I think there's only one or two pics of drift cars, like the multi-colored GTR and the Sylvia next to it (also multicolored). I didn't really see the drift cars on display, minus the RE and Apexi FD, which other ppl posted their pics in other threads. Those GT cars are really somethin tho...you gotta come up for next year's. The sound alone was an experience!

As for Jeff, he's a punk. I PMed him my #, he never called or nothin. I did meet up w/ Gene (RX7Rage), Weili (WaLieN), and Andy (Saburo). Cool guys.

Adam, I've considered custom fab time, but another forum member and I are trying to get ahold of a pair of stock rails first, so we can have someone fabricate a copy, which would be 10 times easier than starting from scratch. So we'll see...

Damon, thanks

Looks good. Do you think the carbon fiber hatch will vibrate because its so light weight? How many hours of labor went into that it must have cost an arm and a leg
