My custom MP3 dock.
My custom MP3 dock.
Well I'm sure some of you people out there have done something like this. Now I would just like to share with you what I have done.
This is will be somewhat detailed with quite a few pictures. Even though it is something that is not very complicated, I definately planned it out like it was. BTW, the pictures were taken with my phone, so they are not excellent, but not bad.
I first drew a sketch of what I wanted the MP3 dock/holder to look like.

After sketching the idea, I realized that I didn't want to make it so I would have to drill holes in my car. I wanted it so I could just remove it incase I ever had to sell my car for any reason
. So if you look at how it mounts, it would require drilling into the car. Later you will see what I ended up coming up with.
I just grabbed some scrap metal and started cutting. Im not quite sure the gauge on this. After quite a bit of cutting and grinding, I tacked all the pieces together with my weldor. I used a MIG 175T BTW, no mig here.

Alright, after tacking, I welded it all together. I did not run full beads along all the edges, otherwise I would have probably gotten some bad warping.
Then, I needed to fill in the little imperfections on some of the sides and edges with some good ole Bondo. Oh yeah, this bondo was meant for us seven owners, just because it has a 3rd gen on the can.

Time to paint. I looked around for some spray paint in my garage(didn't really feel like getting my airbrush all setup) and found this unique kind that finishes in a "hammered" texture. Cool, I'll use it, I wanted to use a silver/ gunmetal color anyway.
After being painted, it was time to connect the bracket to the holder. I decided I would just used a few rivets to get the job done.

Here is my MP3 player.

And here is the final product.

The rivet ends below are on the outside on the back of the holder. I tried to file them down a little bit, but don't think I could have done much more, otherwise the rivets would have fallen apart. Oh well, you can't see them very well anyway because they are behind it.

The bracket that I ended up making that doesn't require any type of drilling into the car sits on the left side of the glove box compartment.

By now you are probably thinking that it will be loose and slide all around, and ultimately won't work. But that's where your wrong. There is a little button that is depressed when you close the glove box on the left side. The bracket is placed above that button so it can rest on it and therefore, won't move. Also, it is actually pretty snug when you close the glove box.

Well, that's about it, nothing to hard to do.
