Mounting a deep 6 1/2 speaker without hitting window?

So I have some components I want to install. I took the doors apart today to start deadening and I came to look at how I'm going to install my components. I have a 94 FD, and with the FD's they have a piece of plastic which is sorta the "basis" of where the stock speakers are. Now I tried to see if my 6 1/2 would fit, but it hits the back of the plastic, so I'm guessing I'll have to cut that piece out? Then my other worry is will the speaker be too deep that it'll get hit by the window when it rolls down or will the speaker hit the door panel "grille"

Basically, for those who have installed 6 1/2's how did you do it and pictures would help.

I had to make custom pieces to fit their, its a lot of work, if your magnet is bigger than 2.75" nothing will work, and you would have to build kick panels. Next time my door panel is off ill take some pics.

Cut the plastic out. If speaker still hits window, cut out a piece of wood and mount the speaker to the wood and install. This should be enough space to clear the window

you may have to cut out rings out of MDF.. that way it pulls the speaker out further.. check how much room you can pull the speaker out... before it touches the door trim.. that would be how much you can pull the speaker out

Ok, so I ran all my wires today but I was trying to figure out how to run wires for my components. Running speaker wire to the door I can to a problem. It is a harness that holds all the wires for the windows, mirror and stock speaker, how am I going to do this?

drill a small hole next to the plastic, than buy new loom and run it through their. Hate to ruin your day, 2.8" wont fit, the door panel will have a huge gap underneath, no matter how far you extend it the gap will be enormous.

Poke a hole in the grommet, run the wire outside of it then back into the other grommet. No need to run the wires inside of the loom! You then zip tie the wire to the factory loom, looks nice (if you electrical tape the wire first).

?? There is no way to mount the speakers? Don't people usually make baffels for them to fit?

Well if there is nothing I can do about it then I guess I'll have to see what the "pro" installers can do about it.

you need to make kick panels for the third time, you will not fit them in the doors no matter how big your baffel is the door panel will not fit over it. Your other option is to sell your mid, buy something more shallow and run your mid and tweeter actively.

Well, there isn't any way to really mount kick panels in our cars. Arn't the grilles removable on our door panels? So 2.5" depth is the max even with the baffels? I really don't want to return these speakers, sorry for all the questions purerx7, I know you're probably like "shut up you can't fit them!" but I really really want to try lol.

Actually, kick panels can fit, just use your imagination. I need to finish mine so I can show you, but for the drivers side, remove the dead pedal and you have room for one their, and make another one on the passenger side kick panel. Thats where mine are going and I have a larger mouting depth than you. Shuold have pictures by this weekend as I plan to finish fiberglassing and bodoing this week.

I don't know what Fd door panels look like.
For the FB it is very easy. Pull the panel off and flip it over. The insert is held in with screws. Use the insert as a template for the foundation (masonite), figure out what size speaker you will be using (I used a 5 1/4"). Make a trim ring out of 1/2" MDF, take this ring and figure out the angle you need for proper alignment and use wood dowels and hot glue to lock this angle in and support the ring. Stretch Felt over the ring and board and staple it on the back or hot glue it down. Soak it with fiberglass resin and let it harden. You can put a layer or 2 of fiberglass ontop, but since its such a small enclosure, you will not need much of a build up. Allow it to dry, sand down the high spots and fill in any imperfection with body filler to get you final shape. Cover with automotive carpeting! Done!

According to my local car audio shop, they would be able to fit the speakers. I already told them the max is 2.5" and the speakers are 2.8" and all I want them to do is make a panel where the speakers will fit nothing else. He said they'd make a spacer and he'd charge $60. I think I might go and see if they can do it because from what you guys are saying here, it is going to be impossible for me to fit these speakers in my doors without the window hitting the magnet.

What do you guys think?

Nobody said that. They did however say that by the time you space the speaker far enough away from the door that it doesn't interfere with the window (easily done) that the speaker may no longer fit behind the door panel unless you want to cut a big hole in the front of it (ugly done).

This is no big mystery. Put the door panel on and roll the window down. Measure from the back of the factory door panel to the window. If you're speaker is deeper than the space you just measured it won't fit no matter who tries!

Thats what I meant, 2.5" being max depth with keeping the door panel stock.
