most functional FC subwoofer enclosures

so i'm trying to figure out what setup would be the best balance of maximizing usable space, good looks, and not getting rid of the spare or rear storage bins. i really like the idea of using the spare tire space, but hate the idea of not having an actual spare. (plug kit's are no substitute)

i was thinking about putting either 1 10" or 12" sealed in a long thin sealed box that would completely separate the storage bin area from the trunk area. but then i realized that's exactly where a strut tower bar would go, so i'm not sure how well that would work anymore.

so let's see the most practical FC sub enclosures.

Sounds like what you want is to put the box between the rear shock towers, under a strut bar. That should be doable, and if you offset the sub, you should be able to mount the amp next to it for an all in one setup. Do you have a rear strut bar now? First thing to do is grab a tape measure, and find out what kind of space you have/want to work with. Then, find a sub you want, and see what the space requirements are. A 10" will obviously need less space, and when powered right will give you plenty of sound. Then take your measurements, and the sub requirements and compare them. Does it work? If so, design and build your box. Then take a pic and post them because I couldn't find any on Google.

How about something like this? It could have been built to fit around a rear strut bar. I originally set out to get it under the cargo cover, but the mounting depth of the 18w3 wouldn't allow it. This setup obvious isn't ideal for a grocery getter.

my plan... for the moment... was to just use an 8" bass tube and secure it somewhere off to the side... that way... the bins are still useable, spare tire still has a home and i still have room for anything i may hawl.

It's an 18" sub, aka large. I looked at doing something similar to what I described in my FD. So now it looks like I'll have to do it twice at some point.

Yah defiantly not "maximizing usable space" but looks great and a very clean setup.

I always wanted to do 2 8" subs in the rear shock tower speaker areas. Anyone who has taken those out or swapped speakers there has seen that there is some usable space there. Not a lot but I always wanted to try for the sake of not taking up any other usable space.

Drops in from the top and hugs the rear of the shock tower. Stays put during drift and touge runs. I have an identical one for the drivers side that I'd sell you. PM me if interested

nope, no strut bar now, but i will have one in the future. now that i'm actually looking, i'll probably end up getting something reasonably priced that looks clean like the tcsportline one. i just need to figure out how much space is between it and the floor.

sweet! that's what i'm talkin about! not interested in buying, but maybe making one myself. do you have any details on how you made it? i'm completely confident in building simple boxes, but i've never done any complex shapes and/or fiberglass.

Here's my thread where I built an enclosure for an 8" sub. I did kinda a hack job and never really put a good finish on it, but it sounds awesome and would be very easy to learn from my mistakes. Lotsa good info in the thread from various members.

hmm. just got an idea for the cleanest setup possible. it would involve removing the factory bins completely and basically replicating the plastic/fiberglass shell that gives it it's structure. it would be completely flat level with the trunk and current storage bin area. i would put a nice high power 10 or maybe even 12" sub on one side, and then use the other side as a place to hide the amp/ additional storage. The bottom would be fiberglass, and the top would be made out of a solid wood slab covered in black carpet to hide it all . but the top portion would be on a hinge and when you lift up it exposes the sub and amp/storage.

completely stealth like. it's hard to describe in words, wish i could just draw a picture.

completely out of the way and still give you a little kick
may not be the loudest or best sounding but if you want a monster system then you have to just give up space. running these in both my cars you can get 8's or 10's and in ranges from 600w-1500w i have 2 1200w in one car and one 1500w in the other
i am please with it and nobody ever knows where the sound is really coming from lol

shot from the front. rear cover snaps in and covers the speaker.

shot from the rear of the car. box sits between the shock towers. think theres still room to add a rear bar.

under sealed box. personaly i like sealed boxes in a hatch
I have the mesurments for the box if anyone wants them.

+1, I learned that the hard way. I used to bump my system loud *** hell everywhere I went, and soon enough it got jacked =(
now I bolt my amps on my sub box inside the trunk so you cant pull them out unless you disassemble it all.

Almost as bad as them stealing the stereo is that they usually break a window doing it!
