Louvered Hoods on FDs

I'm thinking about modding my hood to have louvers like back in the 50s. I had a '40 Ford convert with a '56 Chev V8 back in '62 with a louvered hood and I liked it.

Any thoughts?

I think it could help remove engine bay heat if put in the right places.

I'd get rid of that insulation on the underside of the hood that seems to keep things quieter and heat in.

Anyone have any pics?

I saw a pic a couple of years ago but did not save it.

Thanx,

Ken

Rows of about 3" vents cut in the hood. They let hot air out. Hard to explain. I guess you have to be an old hot rodder to know what I mean.

Were you thinking of something like this:

Or more with the louvers above the oil filler neck and turbos?

Damn, thems is some big louvers!

Anyway, I like the idea, just not on an FD. It looks nice on the right application, but it ruins the graceful curves of the car IMO.

Well, I finally found a shop that cuts louvers. Turns out the biggest they do is 3" and the opening is only 1/4".

I'd have to bring in a hood with no paint on it and the uderside bracing detached. Cost is $5 a cut which is way more than I expected.

So that idea is shot down.

Ah, I found a place that does it for $1 a cut. 100 cuts 3" by 1/4" opening + 75 sq. in. of openings on the hood. I think I'll do it.

Hi Ken,

I think since you have that large ASP IC you should instead make a reverse hood scoop so you get the air bouncing off the windshield then in the the IC...The Louver will do that to a point, but the reverse hood scoop would be really effective with your setup... I believe that was Wyum's plan as well

I don't know if a fiberglass reverse hood scoop would look too good to me. I thought of that awhile back. I agree it probably would be very functional.

I have the feeling Wyum will never get his car done this year.

Nevermind...I found it on the website.

I'd rather get the Mazdaspeed but I think it sits too low and will hit my turbo-to-IC pipe.
