Looking for a red...

Should be in the market for a respray in the next few months and im desperately seeking a nice red for it. I want a nice deep red, darker than stock sort of a cherry color, no kandys or flip jobs though.

Not sure how dark/cherry-ish the new Ford GT red is??

Looked at a few, Audi do a nice red, forget the name, the red from the new Civic type R's, and my favorite is the BMW Imola Red up to now, thats the sort of thing im after, shame its not a metallic

Any suggestions are welcome but a deeper red is really what im after, nothing too OTT.

Cheers

Ryan

I saw a red F360 on the freeway the other day. It was nice and sunny out, and represented the color very well. Very bright, maybe not quite Ford "lazer red" bright, but bright. Flashy, but classy. I'd suggest it for an FD.

I'm not too crazy of that 'vette though. Might look good on an FD, but the 'vette looks a little limp wristed in that color, IMHO.

How about this? I LOVE this color! It's a little darker and flatter than VR but looks great on an FD!

completely forgot about this thread, still havent got around to fitting my body pieces and spraying her, but still on the look out for a bright deep red.

The rx8 red is very nice with the mica bits in the paint, but that color wouldnt do as i dont want the same color as my other car :P

Color i want is along the lines of Carrera GT red, BMW Imola Red, the Audi red on the TT's. Dont want a red thats too wine/purple/maroon looking, got to be a nice shiney deep red

god i annoy myself with how fussy i am

any (more) help is appreciated

Cheers

Damn, another retraction for me in the interiour/exterior forum.

After finding out that WVRX7's car is based off of Ford Laser Red and BlueSkaterBoy's is as well, I was way off... it's a much darker shade than I was thinking of. I was thinking of the red the Ford Lightning comes in... now that's freakin' bright. A Lightning owner told me his was "Laser Red"; guess it wasn't.

Once again, to me at least, it looks much brighter (I'd say some more yellow) in person.

Pictures all are deceiving, you have to go, look in person. Color temperature on a picture can vary wildly, and let's not even talk about monitor calibration

What kinda crappy-*** monitors are you using DC? jk

On this note, I've been meaning to try taking a pic of my VR with the newer Sony F828 with the 4 element CCD; I'm hoping that will resolve the dynamic range issues on the red channel. Has anyone done this yet?

Has nothing to do with the monitor, has to do with the calibration.

At work all our CCD's get color calibrated, with a 3 sensor color spectrometer. That Suction Cups to the screen. If you turn off the monitor it needs a recalibration. if you haven't gotten it calibrated every 30 Days it needs it... and that's for working with color timed film plates. And a Color accurate Projection ....

So you with your Sony F828 are going to get back whatever the sensor perceives as being the "Light Conditions" be that Sunlight 5600 Kelvin, or Indoor Tungsten 3200 Kelvin. or a portion there of.... Your system is flawed, from the beginning.

Unless you shoot a reference image with a color timed reference (McBeth) chart, and then sample the colors until the computer tells you the dynamic range from Black to white is right, and the saturation is even across the 3-4 or 5 color hues.
Then the picture is right, but not necessarily the monitor...

Shoot 12 Bit images and all your color related clipping / rnage issues will go away.

Whoa, that was unexpected. Erm, hope you didn't miss the "jk" in my last post.

I acutally have the 707... my previously unmentioned frame of reference. It supposedly takes 12bit shots, but I've been looking at it's resultant 8bit JPEGs.

The problem I'm seeing, which I've seen w/some other consumer cameras, is a very noisy red channel at mid-low levels despite the fact that the high end is barely starting to clip. Of course some thermal noise in the extreme low end is expected, or during quick exposure/low light... but this is infiltrating the "midtones" in bright conditions.

I suspect it's the linearization (of a non-linear CCD semiconductor) being done after the CCD's been digitally sampled or more likely the "correction" (like you mentioned, shifting of color temperature). I was wondering if the 4th CCD element helped w/interpolating red possibly reducing noise, but I just found out the additional element is "Emerald" (cyan). Guess that won't help the red-end too much, unless the CCD as a whole is less noisy.

.....

Sounds like you know your stuff.

****, look what you made me write!

What was this thread about again?
Uh... yea... so everybody, Laser Red is metallic, FYI.

Ok, I'll contribute a little, rybrx7. It's seems kind of kandy, though. But you seemed dissapointed in the lack of metallic option for the BMW... It's dark, at least.

The guitar is made by Parker guitars. I'd imagine you'd find one in any guitar shop... don't know how plentiful those are in the UK. I asked for some touchup paint for my blue one, they told me it was a PPG automotive paint, and I had to obtain it from them. I imagine the red is PPG too.

Not at all
I just felt compelled to fully explain that color rendition is a very fault prone process, and even under ideal intentions can be offset due to a minor human error.

Therefore paint preference is best done in natural & artificial light conditions, with a painted object in hand that has some curvature to be able to judge sheen, and specularity.
