I think it is a 6x8, not 100% sure though. Try search for speaker size under the audio forum.

its 5x8 in the rear 5 1/4 in the front.

However, I fit 6.5's in the front with no modifications, and I custom fit 6x9's in the back

Yep, 5 X 8 in the rear, in fact a lot of speakers in this size say "Ford/Mazda" on them. I too have some 6.5" components in the front, with the midrange in the normal spot in the door, and the tweeters mounted in the door near the top.

Arghh, they ARE 6x8s in the back. Not 5x7s, not 6x9s, not 5x8s. They are 6x8s.

The fronts are some weird size ~6". You can use 6.5" speakers if they are not too deep (ie, models with 1" thick magnets aren't going to fit...).

You are all wrong. I just changed them 2 days ago. They are 6 1/2 up front and 5 x 7's out back. Dont get speakers with too big a magnet or they won't fit front or back, so you are stuck with stock replacement speakers. And the back might interfere with your seatbelts a bit when you put them in.

No I'm not. The rears are 6x8. You can even look it up in the Body Electrical manual......

Sorry man, don't know how I missed that part. I too just tried searching, I get the same thing. When I pull my speakers this weekend, I will see what size Mazda put in my car and let you all know.

I put 6x8" in the rear using the stock brackets. I'm sure you can also put 5x7" back there, as long as the holes line up.

You are all wrong!!!!

When I did mine I found a few threads that stated the BOSE system used 6x8 and all others were 5x7. I don't think it matters though cause I think you can fit a 6x9 in both.

You can fit a 6.5 up front but they CANNOT be too deep.

I just fit JBL 652s coaxials in the front. They are 6.5 speakers, and are 2" deep. I had to dremel out a bit of the plastic because the magnet hit it, but it was very easy. There were 3 holes already there that fit the adapter plate (included with speakers) perfectly. The holes were full of hot-glue but thats easy to remove.

I was told to go with 5.25" too, but even many of them are too deep. It seems 5.25" and 6.5" tend to use the same "standard" screw holes, the only real difference is the cone size which linked to the depth.

I used Infinity Kappa 6x8 in the rear and 6.5 in the front. The rears didn't line up right and I think I only used like 3 screws to hold them in. For the front I had to cut out the plastic cause the speakers were too deep.

They sound good but could be alot better if they fit right. I could care less cause I never turn up the radio anyways and they are better then the blown stockers.

So mine were 5x7 in a non bose.

hehe, I put in my kappa's which I believe are 5x7 or 6x9. For the front I put in 5 1/4.

Honestly, it sucks how it doesn't fit right but what can I say. It sounding a lot better then it used to with the buzzing. =).

Kappa's rock man but on the passenger side rear, it just wouldn't go in right so I had to use 3 screws instead of 4. Plus the stock screws don't fit so I just had to use a alen key screw with a nut. xP.

It works and im happy plus I am never doing this again as it took forever to line everything back right.

No, it IS 5 X 8. I just looked at the stock ones I pulled out a few months ago. You're on drugs if you think otherwise, unless Mazda put different sized speakers in some models....unlikely. I have the freakin' speakers here in my hands, for God's sake! And the replacement speakers were 5 x 8.
'Nuff said.

Oh yeah, and in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL the speaker is listed as 5.5 X 7.5 in section J1-10.

Read it and weep.

Sorry to sound prickish, but the facts are the facts. Some of you evidently haven't even had the damned speakers out and are trying to give advice!

No company that I know of makes 5x8" speakers. The standard sizes available are 5x7", 6x8", and 6x9". These are the nominal sizes, of course, and the actual speaker size is a little different if you measure with a ruler.

Mazda seems to have measured with a ruler. They list the non-BOSE front door speakers as 6.3", but they are the same size as 6.5" speakers that you would buy from the electronics store. The fronts are 6.5"; no doubt about it.

If the manual lists the rears as 5.5x7.5", that means a 6x8" speaker from the aftermarket is the size that most closely matches the stock speakers. In fact, the aftermarket markets 6x8" speakers as a special size for Ford and Mazda cars. My 6x8" speakers fit perfectly when I replaced them. You can also use 5x7" speakers, I'm sure (some speaker manufacturers don't make 6x8"s). But the stock size of the non-BOSE rear speakers is 6x8".

Here's a write up on my rear speaker replacement:
http://www.maxcooper.com/rx7/how-to/...ers/index.html

The Bose system does not have rear speakers on the sides of the car, but rather they just have that tube subwoofer in the hatch area. It is my understanding that the Bose system uses smaller door speakers as well, but I am not sure what size they are.
