No, not ghetto at all. It updates the look of the car. It looks very nice, not rice at all.

I do the conversion as well with 1 day turnaround for $50. PM me or email davidDchang@yahoo.com w/ your zip if interested.

You can do it yourself too. You just need a heat gun, a compass (to draw circles), contact paper, blk spray paint and screw driver. It takes 4-5 hrs but isn't too hard.

Well, I have done few (20+) conversions using CF film material..

Just a different look.. most are pretty much the same..

And if you decided to go with painted.. Make sure you do it by someone who have done many painted.. as if they make any mistake its very noticable and hard to fix.. painted are not reversable.. as these are..

I recommend Ryan Wolf in Florida.. He has done many painted ones.. I would do it.. but I don't have too much experience with the painting, just carbon filming experience... and If I did mine painted.. i would send to Ryan.. I have seen his work and does excellent work..

i did them as well - its really not that bad and i think it makes the car look SOOO much better-
see it in person and then look at someone's car who has the old lights and you'll be like: "damn! ugh!"

Sorry for the delayed response... some reason, I don't get notices.. Anyhow, to answer your questions.. I charge 85shipped.. Its more than others.. And like I said earlier, If you are going to get it painted.. Use Ryan Wolf (sp?) He's good!! And done many.. I think he said 120+??? I could also do it.. But I have personally lack experience..

I have also converted one just to see.. This is very unique.. Only one made like this so far.. I got my hands on this reflective material like your license plate reflective material.. It reflects at night when head light hits it.. Actually its for sale.. unless this guy in cincy wants it.. (pic at bottom).. Cost 325shipped. If you do want to get your tail lights converted with this reflective stuff. it will be flat 125shipped.. sorry!! the material is pretty pricy!!

Normal light its silverish.. just like your license plate... its super white on the picture because of the flash..

Not to intrude on anyone's money making opportunities, but, why the hell would anyone even contemplate paying someone else to do this?

You own an FD, for Pete's sake. You change your own oil, right? If you don't, you're excluded from this, and probably shouldn't really own such a high maintenance vehicle, but, hey, whatever floats your boat.

Modding the tail lights is cake.

Pull them off the car. One minute.

Take the little screws out. Two minutes.

Hit with a heat gun ($10 at Home Depot), go around and around the back where it's glued down. Two minutes.

Pry the two halves apart now that the glue is soft. Thirty seconds.

Position some two three inch circular sticker ($1 at the crafts store for a sheet of sticker material) over the red lights, one two and three quarters inch stick over the yellow light, a fraction of an inch down from the reds. Two minutes for a perfectionist.

Spray with matte black spray paint ($5 at Home Depot). Enough coats to cover. Five minutes.

Let dry. Overnight.

Remove stickers. Five minutes.

Run heatgun over glue to heat it up again. Five minutes.

Reassemble halves. Thirty seconds.

Replace little screws. Two minutes.

Reinstall lights in car. Two minutes.

Presto.

If you can make a sandwich, you can paint your lights.

I completely understand Goblin's logic.. If you own a 3rd gen.. You need to be some what handy.. or have some money to fix.. But it all comes down to how much is your time worth.. Sure it might take a minute to take the tail lights out (I think it took me at least 5+ minutes).. And taking the cover off.... well, it took me at least 10 minutes each (20 minutes for both).. I might work slower than some.. But I actually timed to see if its worth charging people 85 shipped (only 70 take home).. and it takes me at least 2 hours to complete a set from start to finish.. My guess is that painting the lens does take less time then Carbon Fiber filming.. After all, all you have to do is like Goblin said, stick round stickers on the lens and just spray paint it.. But if you decide to do film over lay, you have to make the template, then you have to overlay it.... for the first timer.. you will probably spend 3-4 hours total... Also you have to consider, if you make mistakes or not.. I certainly did first time.. And ended up completely re-doing my lights.. And didn't really notice the mistake until I put the lights on the car.. So, I had to start from point one..

I think i'm charging very reasonably.. when you look at it.. its about 30 an hour (2.5 hours of my time).. If you are making 30+ an hour at your job.. Its worth it.. spend those 2-3 hours relaxing... I personally like doing this and gives me extra cash for fixing my car.. And I make slightly less than 30 at my currently job.. We all willing to pay 60+ an hour to get mechanical work done.. which in turn, We could all do it! if we had the tools and knowledge.. Just my 2 cents..

This in no way saying Goblin is wrong.. I DO agree with him..

Yeah, I think ppl can certainly do it themselves, it ain't too hard. I've always promoted the taillight mod - not just bc I do it for others but it looks good for little money.

I've done several dozens. It takes 4-5 hrs to do it. At $50, I earn close to minimum wage. I do it bc of the satisfaction I get when I help fellow rotorites look good.

The tools needed to do the job is about $45. $30 for heat gun at Home Depot, $10 for contact paper, $1 spray paint, $3 for a compass. Maybe that's why ppl have me do it!

However some people, like myself, know they would not turn out as good as if they were done by Ryan or Phil.
