Exclamation Interestin': Polished Part ***Coating***...

Hey,

So for anyone that knows me they know I'm a polishing NUT! Anyways, the biggest issue with polished parts is that they need to be "re-polished" over time and generally maintenance on these items is quite high.

Well, recently I found someone capable of ***coating*** polished parts! What this essentially means is that your polished parts will/should no longer require any maintaining. I've decided to be his test subject and have provided a couple parts to test out his procedure. I should be receiving them back shortly and can't wait to see if the claims are true.

I'm not sure if this is old news or if this procedure has been around, but this is definitely the first time I've heard of it. If anyone is interested in further details feel free to hit me up. If people are interested I could post up pictures, but I'm not sure anyone including myself will notice a visable difference.

Thanks!,
Rizwan

Not clear on that yet. It seems to be reasonable, but that I guess depends on your definition. I think I'm being charged $100 to coat my R1 strut bar and I'm waiting to hear how much the other part is. The thing is IF I don't have to ever polish again, that's a steal price to me!

Considering the time it takes to take the parts off, polish them, reinstall them, and the cost of polishing materials, that does sound relatively cheap. That is, if it does work.

It's not just clearcoat. I asked that specifically and apparently if you directly apply clear coat it won't work and will actually make the finish worse from what I'm told. My part is finished, but I haven't picked it up yet. I'll find out more details and post up pictures once I get it.

Just got the part back yesterday and it looks FANTASTIC! You can't even tell that it has a coating on it except if you touch it. Only reason I could even tell is because I've had soo many non-coated polished parts that I know the difference. I'm going to be testing the claims though so I'll be leaving the bar exposed to the elements to see what happens. If the claims hold true, I've definitely found a winner!

I'll post pictures of the part shortly...

It shouldn't even need wax. I was told a simple wet cloth will keep it clean.

I'm not trying to hide anything from everyone. The coater will not disclose to me the process he uses (for obvious reasons) so I don't honestly know.

If this is what I think it is...

Teflon based clear hard coating.

I heard about this technology a few years ago.

It's designed for cleaning painted surfaces without the use of precious water. (military desert application) originally, but now shifting to the OEM auto industry.

The results years ago were very impressive.

I wonder if this is kind of whatik thinking about.

that looks f'in awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing how it holds up. Any idea what the coating is yet? It'd be nice to not have to ship big parts.

I'm capable of reading, thanks. I was just wondering if he was any closer to finding out any details on the product, since I am interested and cross-border shipping just to get a part coated would be a real bitch.

I haven't found out any additional info on the procedure. I understand the complications of "international" shipping so if I do determine anything I'll be sure to post about it.

Update: So, it's been a little over a month since I had the metal R1 strut bar coated. I specifically chose this part because aluminum doesn't oxidize nearly as fast as metal does. So far the part is in the *exact* condition I got it in! I'm very pleased about that.

I've been leaving it exposed to the elements to see whether the claims are infact true as I'm not trying to waste my own money coating every part if the procedure doesn't work. I will wait 3 months total before giving my final opinion. If all goes well, I plan on coating every part I have polished and hopefully never have to touch them up again .

I'm curious if it is a form of powder-coating, either a chrome powder, or a clear Polyester TGIC or something.
