Ideas for weight reduction???

Any more ideas on how to save a few pounds???
This is what I've done so far.

Removed AC and Power Steering.
Light weight Battery.
Removed Air Pump and Emisions crap.

Here are a few ideas that I have to help shed a few more pounds.

Sleek light that replace the pop ups and the motors, etc...
Carbon Fiber hood. (which one?)
Some of the new Volks that weigh 13 lbs. a piece.
Gutting out the rear (carpet, bins, etc...)
C-West Hatch with Lexan (where and how much???)
Lightweight brakes (which ones?)
Carbon Fiber Drive shaft.
8.5 Flywheel.
Maybe a lighter exhaust (HKS Racing or Rotary Extreme)
Remove the front bumper support.
Remove the front combo lenses.
Remove the back up lights.
Remove hatch shocks.
Remove the wiper motors and asseblies.
Lexan windows (where?)
Maybe convert to roll up windows.
Take out all the stereo crap.
Lightweight seats (which kind???)
Remove one of the brake lights and associated wires.
Take out any sound deading material, etc...
Lose 30 lbs.
Get rid of the Girl friend.

Anything I missed???
Any other ideas, or comments???
Where can I get some of these things, any estimate on how much the car would weigh???

sparetire

smaller lighter steering wheel

mount seat to the floor to remove railings, or make a small lightweight bracket

fibreglass doors

This is too ******* insane. Switch to roll up windows? Realistically though what type of racing are you going to be using it for? If its gonna be a hardcore race car you're probably gonna need a full chromoly roll cage. If you get the cage you can take out the front and rear bumper supports and gut out the the door supports (the cage will protect you instead of these). If its never gonna see the street you can cut out the floor, firewall, and roof and replace them w/ sheetmetal and acid dip the doors and some body panels(the roll cage will provide the structural support). Depending on what type of racing you're gonna be doing some of your mods won't help. If its road racing they should all pretty much help. But if you're going drag then things like the lightweight flywheel won't help, you'll probably want a heavier one. The cwest hatch won't help either cause you'll want a lot of weight on the rear. The light weight brakes in the rear won't help too much either if you have enough hp-- light brakes help with initial acceleration, but if you have enough power you'll be spinning the tires at the line anyway so the heavier stock brakes would probably help you more cause they'll have more momentum and add to your trap speed. With any type of racing you're gonna want to hack as much weight out of the front as possible. BTW the 13 lb. Volks are only the 13 in. ones, the larger rims are heavier.

Those are some pretty extreme things to do that will only shed a pound or two in a lot of cases. Oh and the hatch is a bitch without the shocks ... but if you don't want yours I'll take them since mine are blown.

Fiberglass fenders ... Border or Amemiya.

slim fast 2X a day worked for me, and i lost 6" in just 2 weeks..J/K

i know there are some fibergl/carbon door shells out there. you might have mentioned it, but i missed that...canman6969 can most likely help you out..

then again you could always go with the chromoly-tube chassis..

Most any race shell(Sparco, Momo, Recaro, etc) will be lighter than the stock ones which are already fairly light.

Here is a website which lists all the weight reductions you can achieve

If you've got the money, these are the things i would worry about...
Sleek light that replace the pop ups and the motors, etc...
Carbon Fiber hood. (which one?)
Some of the new Volks that weigh 13 lbs. a piece.
Lightweight brakes (which ones?)
Carbon Fiber Drive shaft.
Maybe a lighter exhaust (HKS Racing or Rotary Extreme)
Take out all the stereo crap.
Lightweight seats (which kind???)
Take out any sound deading material, etc...
Lose 30 lbs.
These are the most practical and should save some weight. One good tip is if your really serious strip the interior out and remove all the tar insulation off the shell, then put your carpet back in.

i suggest taking a look at the August issue of SCC.

they cut the weight of a Sentra from 2762 lbs to 1674 lbs, and shaved off 2 full seconds in the 1/4 mile just from the weight reduction, with the only power adders being removed exhaust and removed intake.

check it out.

glassman: you've named almost everything i've already done......but i've done a few more than that. I've also added weight with the roll cage and suspension parts and tranny. My car weighs in right now without me at a little south of 2400lbs. I'm trying to shed a little more weight with a few more tricks.....i want the car to be down to around 2100-2200lbs when i'm done. I'm anticipating some rule changes for next season I want the car as light as possible.....then i can place weight where i need it.

I doubt i'll meet my goal......but i'm not stopping until i get as close as possible.

From: Miami - Given 1st place as the POOREST city in the US as per the federal government
Tubulor control arms (made somewhere in yapan)
Chromoly sway bars
Lightweight coilovers
Removal of the rear reinforcement bumper (but bad for traction)
Switch from the stock fuel filter to a lightweight K&N model
Lighter ECU (Don't laugh. My PFC actually weighs a good amount LESS then my stock ecu )
Remove front radiator support and think of something contructive to put in its place

that's crazy... Wonder if you could get a FD down to that...

Anyways, you might try like someone else said I think getting a full chrome moly tube chassis.. You could probably drop weight considerably, but personally I wouldn't waste time removing the signal lenses, etc.

After looking at that weight reduction list I know realize why Kevin Wyum ran what he did with the stock twins. Damn his car was light.

The C-West hatch for the money isn't all that good of a deal, you only loose 7 pounds. Just a little FYI

Why stop there? I would remove both doors (they are VERY heavy). Do you really need the passenger side floorboard? What about the roof? I see NO need for it, cut it off too. I **think** you can replace the gas tank with a thick poly plastic bag, it will save you a few lbs. Remove your Speedometer and Tach too, no need for them if you get your time from the track. I would get a small 2.5 inch TV with a LCD hook a 28 once webcam to the dash and remove the drivers seat too. you can sit on the floor and see ahead of you. Remove the windshield and replace with High strength Saran -Wrap.

If you get rid of the hood and fenders you will also be much lighter and alot of the 70's muscler car owners will be jealous.

If I think of anything else I will let you know.

David

zerobanger: thanks for the ideas.....i'll try to use some of them I did replace my gas tank with a thick plastic tank.....not bag. It saved close to 20lbs. The doors are next.....replaced by either CF or fiberglass that will save i'm guessing around 75lbs. total. With that 75lbs. removed i'd be weighing in at 2300lbs. Put close to 600rwhp into the equation and there you go.......recipe for 8's.

just for the record, SCC cut the roof off of the sentra, stripped the doors, hood, fenders, anything safe, seats, carpet, floodboards, and put some 12 pound rims loaded with slicks.
