Ideas for a custom hood ?

I'm trying to make a hood to go along with my custom horizontal IC setup. I'm trying to make something different that no one else has. I already cut the hole and now I'm not sure what to do next. Maybe a scoop, a vent, or nothing, just some trim around it, I'm not sure. I'd like you guys to just give me some feedback (good or bad) about what you think.

thanks
Ray

Oh god....reminds me of what I did to my firebird.

What was I thinking.

Stop now!

Oh the horrible memories..........

Seriously, I would have had a full plan before I started cutting. I had the same idea, but something that small across the front might not look as good as you think.

well the hood was full of dings anyway. I planed on buying another one so I figured I'd give it a shot and see what I could come up with. Your firebird had an intercooler ?

Heh...no. A high rise intake with teeny air cleaner that was too tall to close the hood. I doubt I have any pics, but if I do, I'll post them. Anyway, I cut a circle in the hood so it could close. I was planning to add a real scoop, but never got to that point. Damn it looked stupid. Oh well. Live and learn.

Maxpesce --- wow, thats a cool job you did. The only thing is I don't know how well that would force air in though the IC. I was thinking maybe the other way, and maybe not so high. But I think the way you have it would look better. Thanks for the pic !

Given your horizontal IC, I think this type of hood would look and work best:

Of course, you'd have to put a foam seal around the IC so that it sealed with the hood closed!

You dont want to force the air in from the TOP you want to duct air to the under side of the IC and vent it OUT through the Hood. if you force air into the engine compartment through the hood & behind the Radiator you will reduce the cooling effectivness of the rad (less press differential accross and hence less flow through the rad.) and since that EXTRA air will then have to exit out the bottom of the car it would increase both LIFT and DRAG - Both BAD.

Question

What did you use to cut the hood with? How long did it take you?

Just make a small vent to suck air OUT of your engine bay. Hot air is never good.

used a saws-all to cut the whole. I took some time making sure it was centerd and at 90deg. angles. Then I carefully and slowly cut the whole out.

about the air flow - there is very little space to run a duct up behind the IC to give it and and vent it out they way you guys are explaining. What if I put a sheild in there between the rad. and the IC ? I don't want hot rad. air blowing up through the IC that would only make it hoter. Just cuting the whole out alone droped my Intake air tem 25.C Thanks for all the ideas so far guys, everyone has good points.

Third Try Posting!!!!

Trim the cut, raise the IC higher into the hood, paint it black (heat holding color offset by direct cooling by passing air) and have a Ferrari look.

I've never liked the red on red look myself... I think black trim gives it a little distinction.

The thing I really like is that it would be breathing truly fresh air. And as you said, it would be unique... for around a month till everyone started copying you. I myself would like to do something similar. I would like to have two smaller ICs, in the hood as suggested but in the place (or close to it) where the Ferarri has the light covers.

Good luck with whatever you decide. If you get it done, I'd like to see it on a roll-by on the way to Montreal!

Just got in from working on my car since 8:00pm. This car has just been one thing after another, I plan to write something up about it on the single turbo forum. Coverting to single has ALOT more too it than most people think(or more than I thought anyway) and I did everything the hard way !! But maybe I can save someone else the trouble. Anyway thanx again. I'll post up the finished product once it's done.
