Horror Stories About Kandy/Pearl Paint?

Just got off the phone with a local paint shop, which is trying to discourage me from painting my car anything not OEM (as in OEM for ANY manufacturer) unless it's a show car because they can't match scratches and dings on a Kandy and most pearl paintjobs.

Anyone out there with such paint work that has had a problem?

This won't be a daily driver, but it'll definitely be used at least a couple times per week in the evenings and on weekends.

What do you guys think?

Ask Tony w/ RXecret7.com. His car is painted w/ the Chameleon colored paint (I don't know the exact name/brand). He can tell you about some horror stories w/ having a custom paint job like that one.

Also ask Crashunit here in the forum. He has the Kandy Cobalt Blue I think.

Keep in mind that some OEMs, do use a pearl color in some of their cars. I've seen Saturn use a pearl white color. Audi also has used a pearl white color, but it had more pearl in the paint. I have no idea which specific color you are looking at, but these are examples that I know of.

I would guess it will depend on what color you are using. If you don't mind the "let me get my car repainted about every 2 years" then it probably would be ok.

As DomFD3S said, Audi does use some Pearl colors in their cars. I know, I purchased an A4 for my wife a few months back. I didn't go for any of their off colors though, but they have a Black with the Pearl swirling effect in it, a Pearl White, and some others.

I would imagine it would be tough to match something like that if you needed a panel repainted.

Yes, it is a pain in the *** to get it match because of the pearl. You will have to have the exact paint to get it right. Like all the paints, especially the pearl you will have to paint it only one time only.

well matching a kandy color is impossible, as for pearl paint...its not hard at all, if someone says its hard, they dont know what they are doing simple as that.

I spray for a living and I sprayed my car with a pearl paint, alos I just got a vented hood for my car and I sprayed it off of the car and it matched perfect you just got to make sure you sray the same direction same speed about the same distance from the surface and the same airpressure but you do need some that knows what they are doing. Kandy paint you will never match and it fades really fast, hope this helps

OEM pearl, Brave Blue (5N)

My '91 N/A is 'Brave Blue' and according to the paint shop is a pearl paint.

I want to paint a replacement passanger side mirror, so I guess I'll see how hard it is to match
