Home Paint Jobs: Ideas and Help...
Hey Just writing to ask if anyone here has done their own paint job before???
Got into a wee smash on the freeway and found a New Turbo II hood and bumper for my s4 but they are black!!!
I heard that people have painted there bumpers and hoods by rolling them and clear coating them and wet sanding also. Since I want the same red as my Fc I am going to Lowes so that they cam make paint that matches my fc's paint pretty well.
Just need help to see if anyone has ever done it before and how they did it and how it turned out, pictures if you guys have any too. Thanks.

If you sand to bare metal, use an etching agent, or etching primer--otherwise the new paint won't stick to the aluminum hood.
Don't go to Lowes--go to an auto paint supplier and use professional quality paint.
Attached are two pics--the car got caught in a hailstorm (baseball size). I was unable to use paintless dent removal methods on the aluminum hood, so I had to fill and paint it. I don't have a picture of the final result, but it matched perfectly. I also painted the headlight covers and the front bumper fascia, so there wouldn't be any color contrast between adjacent items.

DO NOT Roll paint on.. I am not going to go through all the reasons why not.. It is too labor intensive with poor results..
Here are a few examples of paint I have done.. But for the average joe pay $150 and have a shop paint the hood...
The truck was painted using TSC acrylic enamel ($80 paintjob)
The Red FC was the bodykit and trim only with krylon spraypaint
The Desk is with Dupont Hothues Paint/clear
The multicolored FC is flat black paint with clear over it...

I did my fenders matched to stock color with rattle can from paintscratch.com. The primer rattle cans sucked but you sand it so it doesn't matter. Their basecoat is awesome. The clearcoat rattle cans sucked like the primer and I wish I had a shop do it (instead I had a shop fix it, but it's still not quite right if you look close). The primer and clearcoat are both what you find in the auto store, while the basecoat is custom. That's probably why. I needed at least twice as much paint as what they recommended, probably b/c of the shape of the fenders and all the waste around them.
Anyhoo besides the paintscratch.com stuff you need a clean & fully enclosed garage, 2+ mil painter's plastic, a plastic suit, hair net. Multiple light coats are essential. The primer must be perfectly smooth b/c the basecoat is razor thin, and will not hide imperfections.
If you don't have a compressor and gun for canned paint, you need their rattle cans and they aren't cheap. Or they recommend going to a hardware store and getting the PreVal compressed air cartridge gun. Plan it out; it's often better to pay a shop $150..

Here is a black paint job I did last year on a 67 charger.
PPG deltron Base and DCU2055 Clear coat from PPG as well.
This was a $8 grand paint job tho.Wet sanding and Polished.
Before you put your paint on remember the paint job is only as good as the body work and prep below it all.
Before
Trunk
Hood
Finished

You can also get clear coat in a Can also.
It would cost you about $50 bux for all the materials to paint your own parts.
Wet sanding and polishing optional depending on your spraying and prep skills.
ok
First remove the turbo intercooler inlet.
Then primer surfacer about 2 coats.
guide coat then wet sand with 600 and check for lows and highs.
If all is good guide coat it once more and wet sand with 600.
Wash hood and dry.
Use wax and grease remover and tack clotch right before you spray to make sure a dustless surface.
Spray the jams and edges first then let dry.
second coat even and dry. Then 3rd coat of base color and let it flash(dry) for 1 hr then prepare to Clear coat.
first coat jams and a dry coat.
Then 2 more wet coats with about 45 minutes between coats so you don't have sags or runs and to have proper inner coat adhesion.

Flashing is very important. Each paint requires different flash times (allows the gasses to escape the finish) before applying different coats. Most clears require a 15-20 minute flash time. The base I used on the desk was a 30 minute flash time.

Here's the spray booth I made, the sides roll up to the ceiling when not in use. works just like those roll up window shades with rope and some pulleys. Velcros to the wall and at the corner, weighted with conduit at the floor. furnace filters in the door, exhaust fan at the roll up door end. The new basecoat/clearcoat paints are easy to apply and dry super fast, ready to buff in a very short time. biggest challenge is keeping dust out of the paint. If you can keep it clean enough you won't even have to buff it.

you'll want to pressure wash the underside and wheelwells if you can, and get every bit of dust out of every crevice so it can't get blown back out on to the paint when you are shooting it. practice on a dented hood to get the gun adjusted before you spray the car. clean and wet vac then damp mop the floor of your painting area to get up any dust.
